Owner description: After nearly a 200-year hiatus and a multi-million dollar reconstruction, George Washington's Distillery & Gristmill is back in business - producing grain products powered by a 16-foot waterwheel and the same rye whiskey that made the Founding Father the nation's most successful whiskey producer in the years after his presidency. Located at the original site, George Washington's Gristmill highlights his vision for America's future as "granary of the world;" while his Distillery is the only site in North America that demonstrates 18th-century distilling from seed to barrel.

“Great tour!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

The tour of Washington's grist mill was definitely worthwhile. Pete did a great job of explaining the whiskey operation. The only disappointment was that the whiskey was not available for sale as it is distilled in the off-season.

“Great Whiskey”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

Just down the road from the Mansion, the Grist Mill and Distillery is a must visit. The mill is operated frequently, grinding meal for sale. The brief tour is quite informative and detailed.

“originality at it's best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

Was very comprehensive in the way it all worked and original.
It is great if you really get into the mechanical ways things like this were designed and used.
As a female, I was not into all the mechanics of it, but if this interests you, do not miss it for it is a great specimen of "modern technology" of the 1700's.
Don't get me wrong, it still a wonderful collection for it's period and gives you an accurate accounting of all that went into "processing" of that time. Interesting all the same.

“an under-visited gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

I loved the Grist Mill. I don't think enough people visit this interesting place.

The docents are well-informed and patient with myriad questions. In addition to the Grist Mill, there is also a distillery. We enjoyed learning about both "industries" and how the Father-of-our-Country was willing to experiment with his revenue sources 200 years ago.

“Fun place to see if you have a little extra time.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

The grist mill is about 3 miles from Mount Vernon. It's worth a stop if you have some extra time. The tour is less than half an hour but it is interesting.
