“We want to return!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

I recently took my grandchildren to DC for 4 days. Since we flew, I didn't think we would be able to get to Mount Vernon due to the logistics of getting there. But we picked up a bus tour that picked us up at our hotel and gave us the better part of a full day at Mount Vernon & Arlington National Cemetery. The only down side of a tour is that you are limited for time, etc, but the upside was that the tour guide gave us a lot of background and history that we would not have had otherwise. Mount Vernon is a beautiful property with so much history, I feel it is a "must-see" if you can possibly do it. We would like to return since we now know what we missed due to time constraints! We did not get to the distillery so that would be another place that we would like to see. There is a food court in the visitor's center and a regular "sit-down" restaurant. We opted for the sit-down restaurant and it was a treat for all of us! Good food & service and only slightly over-priced!!

“Mt Vernon”

Visited Mt Vernon with my two granddaughters, eight and five. They loved it. History comes alive when you walk through the plantation.

“Like time travel”

It is so amazing to walk the same grounds that George and Martha Washington walked! The property is beautiful and the tour of the home very informative.

“Father of our country”

We started off thinking an hour or two, and ended up spending the whole day. The views from the mansion are wonderful, but don't miss the mansion tour. The line looks long, but it goes pretty fast.

It's worth the stop to also see the grist mill and distillery which are just off the property.

“Balance time vs. price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

We only had 3 days in the DC area to see all we could see. Looking back, I wish we hadn't spent the time and money to go to Mount Vernon. Don't get me wrong. It was beautiful, educational, with plenty to do and see. We had budgeted the entire morning to this one attraction. (30-45 drive followed by 2-2.5 hrs. sightseeing and then eat in the car on our way back to DC) We ended up spending more time than planned, which meant we had to sacrifice something else on our super long list on DC attractions. And, pay a hefty sum to eat at the food court on site.
Since there is so many free or low cost things to do, I think this should be left for a longer trip or maybe the second time visiting. I would suggest travelers give a full 3-5 hours at Mount Vernon if you are going to pay the ticket entry.

Thank you for your review. I'm happy to hear that you were able to visit, even if it left you with less time to see other DC sites. I agree with you that visitors should allow 3 hours minimum to tour the estate, but you could really spend the whole day. We know there is a lot to see in the area, and we're happy that you chose to spend your morning with us.
