“Girl's Weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

Wow! Absolutely beautiful! We sampled fantastic appetizers and wine in the Gold Cup bar and fabulous cuisine in Harriman's dining room and the service throughout the resort was top notch. We timed our visit perfectly as the inaugural Middleburg Film Festival was in full swing and we were able to take in a fine film and do some great people-watching as the charming little town of Middleburg was full of activity. We will be back!

I just returned from a perfect girls weekend. We spent plenty of time in the Gold Cup wine bar and had amazing and friendly service every time. Such a warm and inviting place to spend time with friends. We ended our weekend with dinner in Harriman's. WOW! We ordered several appetizers, entree's and sides to pass around. So delicious and our server never missed a beat. I'm looking forward to another trip to The Salamander... This time with my husband.

On a side note, Middleburg, VA is a great little town. I can't wait to go back.

My husband and I spent a weekend here to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversay. We had a lovely experience all around. Check in went smoothly -- they actually upgraded us to a suite in honor of our anniversary and sent champagne and chocolates (complimentary) to our room. Very nice touch. Staff was very friendly, attentive, and accommodating. We especially enjoyed Carlo in the Gold Cup Lounge -- excellent resort employee and manager. The spa is amazing -- we had a couples massage in a private room that included use of an outdoor jacuzzi tub -- loved it and recommend Benita as a massage therapist. Beds are very comfortable and the rooms are well appointed. Private shuttle service is available into Middleburg upon request -- we used this service once and our driver even refused to be tipped. We sat out by the fire pit on the Grand Lawn in the evenings. Enjoyed that very much with a cocktail in hand. The equestrian center is lovely and well done -- we do not ride, but enjoyed walking through and visiting with the horses and the barn cats. :) No complaints at all. Will definitely stay again in the future. The town of Middleburg is very quaint -- we ate at the Market Salamander and the Red Fox Inn. Would recommend both. I think any of the "quirks" that may have occurred early on upon opening have been worked out.

Room Tip: Suite on the first level is nice as you have your own outdoor seating area and direct access to the...

Expectations are interesting. You expect superior appointments, service, space, food and more at an expensive, upscale resort--after all, you can get a room anywhere but an experience is what you're paying for.

Salamander Resort & Spa is lovely. It looks warm, comforting and expensive all at the same time...not an easy thing to do. The staff was, for the most part, exceptionally nice without being cloyingly sweet. The room (ours was a double queen on the first floor) was amazingly spacious with a bathroom that, in some hotels, might qualify for a single room...scrumptious! And the property building and grounds are wonderful--I spent mornings in front of the fireplace with coffee and newspaper followed by a stroll around the grounds. Those are the superlatives that are included in the experience we were looking for...nice.

The mediocre included the restaurant (definitely need more training for staff). We only had breakfast and, judging from that small sampling, the menu might need a few tweaks. Also ok was the spa experience. It is a beautiful addition to the property but not yet destination-worthy. Taken as a part of the weekend it was good but Red Door Spas have been more relaxing and soothing. Note: the tiled heating beds were fantastic! The questionable staff includes the concierge (she might have just been overwhelmed but we knew more about the area than she seemed to) and the porters who were enthusiastic but a little rough around the edges and, as the first people greeting guests, can set the tone for the entire trip.

Things like lights not working, tv cable trouble, phones (we never did get our phones to work)...I'm confident the resort will work out those little details that, while annoying, we know are part of the opening pains. We chose to go early knowing there would not be perfection that will, I'm sure, be attained with more time and experience.

So set your expectations to the upper part of the scale for the Salamander but give a bit of room for improvements.

Room Tip: The property is BIG. If you don't want to have a long walk to your room make sure you indicate...

A group of about 5 girls went to Salamander Resort and Spa in the amazing town of Middleburg for a ladies gathering! We had drinks in the Gold Cup bar, service was fantastic, great atmosphere and decorated so well, we really had a great time. We also went to Dinner at Harrimans: Virginia Piedmont Grill, we had a fabulous server who answered all out crazy questions, I started out with the Carmelized Vidialia Onion Soup, which took my breath away it was so good, then I ordered the Certified angus Beef rib eye for my entree, it was cooked to perfection, I could not have been more pleased with my meal. Plenty of space at the tables for jackets, purses and such. The entire wait staff made us feel like we were the only ones dining that night. The Chef came out and said hello which was a real treat. We look forward to our next trip back very soon!

I'm a local and wanted to wait until the opening hoopla died down a bit before trying out the new Salamander Resort. I checked it out this weekend with a group of girlfriends & was surprised at how fantastic the experience we had at Harriman's was. I've heard mixed reviews from a few people, but we had nothing but doting service and delectable dishes from the Harriman's staff. We had rounds of wine that we all loved, suggested by their sommelier, that didn't break the bank. We dabbled in a little bit of everything on the menu but the highlights for me were the Chesapeake oysters on the half shell (super clean & the toppings were unique & very complimentary to the oysters), Salamander mac & cheese (dreaming about this, cannot describe in words), Strip Steak (perfectly seared for a crisp top with a warm juicy red center & the reduction sauce over it was divine) and the Stilton Cheese Tater Tots (I mean, seriously??!). I also had bites of my friend's pork chop which was nice and tender & onion soup which I wish I had gotten. Now I'm not a big dessert person but we also tried the garlic beignets which were pretty good and the 10 layer chocolate cake with bacon ice cream. I'm not a big fan of the whole chocolate dipped bacon fad but having the perfect bit of cake and bacon ice cream was amazing.

Highly recommend checking out Harriman's if you want a really significant dinner. I've been to the Yappy Hour at the resort once as well & that is a fun casual way to experience the hotel without feeling like you need to put on heirs.

This is a review of a Sunday afternoon lunch at the Gold Cup Wine Bar. TA does not seem to have a separate listing for the restaurants at Salamander.

Despite the recent sub-par Washington Post reviews of the resort and dining, we drove out for a look-see and lunch on a Sunday afternoon in late October. This was about a month after the resort opened and a few weeks after the Post reviewers' visits, and I am happy to say things seem to be shaping up.

First--Getting There! Google Maps takes you on a right turn from Rt. 50 in Middleburg onto Madison and then has you looking to turn left on "Salamander Lane." Well, turns out that is the large entry marked "Service Entry/Equestrian Center." We drove past, looking for Salamander Lane, stopped, called, turned around and went in the service road. Leaving, we discovered the FRONT entrance is a block farther on Rt. 50, turning right just past the low-key Safeway on N Pendleton Street. No biggie, but the town reportedly has been hostile to the idea of Salamander for years (it took forever to get the permissions to open) and it is amazing they do not allow a sign). We self-parked.

Salamander is very welcoming, including if you just want to look around. Clearly, they hope to attract "locals" and day-trippers and it is true that honey, not vinegar, encourages patronage and repeat visits.

The Gold Cup is attractive and service was quite good. The wine list by the glass (I understand there is a bottle list also) and wine-food pairings looked imaginative and well-chosen. What we liked is that there are indeed some VA wines, but only good ones. VA wines are still a mixed bag.

I had a flight of sparkling wines (which tended to the fruitier, as do some newbies to wines, and VA wineries are very aware of this) and the burger. My husband had the ham sandwich and the same wine choice. For dessert he had the cheesecake and I had a glass of the VA sparkler. The dessert was the star, but the sandwiches were very good and the fries were excellent. Total including tip was just under $100.

After lunch we walked on some of the trails on the property. It was very pleasant and I can see us coming back. Maybe even come for Thanksgiving in 2014 and stay the night....hopefully Harrimans (dinner place) will be in full gear by then.
