“Fine time in the Mountains”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2008

Just got back from a week at Massanutten and stayed in Woodstone - this place was recommended by RCI. Did the timeshare tour (lasted about 5 hours) got in return free lunch for 3 people and two adult activity cards ($198) so it was worth the time. Regarding the tour, they give you one price for the timeshare, and then after you say no, they give you another, then when you think you are leaving, they bring you into another room where another person lowering the price and makes you another offer. Such a game. I was not going to buy as I already own somewhere else, but if you have any intentions of buying here, tell them no, and see what else they will offer you.

The activity cards got us free admission to the movie, Shenandoah Caves, $20 off per person for the Washington DC tour (recommend it), 1/2 off the water park, $ off for golf lessons and many more, we saved about $200!

This resort has alot to do, because there is hardy anything else to do out of the resort. Even the locals come to have fun at this resort.

Would recommend this resort for families.

Please do not go to this place under any circumstances!

I made a reservation to spend a week in Massanitten, when i arrived I could barely find the way to the check in desk as things are marked very poorly; then I was told by the clerck I need to drive about 3 miles up the mountain and the hotel room will be "there.on the right" . The fact of the matter is that once you drove up the mountain there were several clusters you woould come to and non were clearly marked, despite the fact that I had asked repeatedly if there were any turns and I was told "no" after driving three miles from the check indesk I needed to make a turn before I could begin looking for the building.
Once I found the room I was amazed at the conditions of the rooms, the walls wewre covered in filth, the paint was peeling the beds were so old and cheap you had to be careful not to fall when turning.
The front desk never answers the phone. One can easly tell that there is no type of customer service training provided to the staff, fpr they have no interest in the customers or they service they were providing.
The pool is so dirty you could'nt see your hand under the water. there is only one restaurant , and there wre flies landing on your plate as they are serving you your meals.
When I was checking out I was told that they do not give receipts, and that I was invited to come to a promotion, which was not true. I finally had to ask for the holtel manager to get a copy of the bill, she however was not interested in anything I had to say. She simply offered a free pass to an activity as though this could make-up for the rudness of the staff and the filthy conditions of the facility.

If there is is any health facility in the harrisonburg area they should close down this facility, for it is a DUMP!

We booked through RCI. The units we were assigned were spacious, but in a large building with at least 12 units. Running upstairs was pretty loud. The pictures did not do the apartments justice, they were much bigger than expected and well appointed with everything you might need, except personal items, like tissues, shampoo, etc., My only complaint about the rooms is the bedding. The mattresses were awful, so soft your back killed you , the sheets were cheap and thin and the pillows were flat.

Very Busy check in on a Sunday (in fact they sent us a postcard saying if we delayed our arrival until 7 PM, they would give us 4 -$5 coupons) We didn't wait it was not worth our time.
In order to get our parking sticker, they sent us to another desk which trapped us into a "survey" tour and sales pitch for resort, they said it would be 2 hours, no, it was 4. In exchange we received 2 activity cards worth $99 each. If you don't golf, they are worth nothing. We used it for water park discount. They offer many classes and activities, each with a price tag, every time we called, there was no space available. Don't be fooled by these come on cards, they are worthless. You have the option of $100 cash for taking the tour, take that at least you will pay your water park admission in full.

This resort is huge and you really need a car to get anywhere, we had two families together, both of whom had different interests, we had only one car, so it made it really difficult for eveyone to do what they liked. They really need a shuttle to take people from place to place.

Have lunch a Fairways if you have a chance, the food was great.

We were a little surprised to see all of the barriers and stantion posts in the rec center lobby when we arrived to check in at 10:00 p.m. There must have been long lines earlier in the day. RCI offered this to us as an exchange for our beachfront 2BD condo in Kauai. Not exactly a fair equitable trade.

When we arrived to our unit at Woodstone, we found it pretty basic. Our two kids had to flip a coin over who would sleep on the floor and who would sleep on the hideabed couch in the living room. Fortunately we found the bedding for the hideabed in the upper closet of the single bedroom, which had an uncomfortable king sized bed. Pretty low thread count on the sheets and exactly four small bath towels are included in the unit. If you want more towels there is a charge.

If you expect basic hospitality items such as shampoo, lotion, shower cap, etc, you won't find them here. You'll have to buy all of that stuff and your own box of tissue (if you'll need it) at the grocery store, Food Lion, down in Elkton. If you want more than two small bars of soap during your week, then you'll need to buy that too. There are also no hair dryers, so be sure to bring yours from home.

The kitchen had exactly 4 of everything - 4 plates, 4 small 6oz coffee cups, 4 forks,...you get the idea. If you're there for a family reunion or something, have everyone bring their own utensils from their units. There is a coffee maker, toaster, microwave, blender, stove oven, dishwasher and fridge. There are 4 gas grills outside and two picnic tables, so that's an option for cooking as well. There is also a small iron and mini-table-top ironing board (about 2 ft.).

We didn't play much golf as the weather was too hot, and we found that the activity cards were not really worth the four hours we spent with "Rita" during the time-share schpeel. She did give us some nice helpful hints for what to do when we drove down to Williamsburg, however. Our teenage kids felt that 7 hours was more than enough time at the water park, and didn't feel the need to go back. We went to comedy night, and it was fine, though, we recommend getting there about 30 minutes before they open the doors if you want to sit anywhere you can see.

We found that the spa appointments were few and far between, so we couldn't do that. After seeing the spa, we didn't feel like that was such a bad thing.

Things we liked about the area: Skyline Drive through Shanandoah National Forest, Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, Berkeley Plantation, Monticello and Mitchie's Tavern, Anitque mall in Harrisonburg. We did the day-long Washington DC tour with Massanutten Adventures and were pleased. Our guide was Mike, and he was a wealth of useful information.

It's a nice area. My advice is to make good use of your car and see the things near this resort.

  • Liked — Close to interesting historical sites
  • Disliked — The unit itself was low-end in terms of quality - bedding , towels, etc.

We booked our week at Woodstone Meadows through an RCI timeshare exchange. We were given a two bedroom/two bath condo in a new building. Our first impression was that the condo was spacious and clean. Our unit was in a three story building with an elevator. We had a partial kitchen (without a range.oven) and were provided an electric skillet, a hot plate, and an electric frypan which suited our needs just fine. There are grills with picnic tables between buildings. There is a space saver washer and dryer just outside the door and is shared with the full kitchen unit.

A huge jetted tub was in the main bath--awesome to relax in after a day of golf and hiking. We had a king bed, 2 twin beds, and a pull-out sofa which accommodated our family of five nicely. For a resort of this caliber I would expect better mattresses and bedding. The sheets were "thin" and the beds were firm beyond belief. Our unit had an electric fireplace which was cute but not a very convincing "fire."

The resort ammenities are incredible. There is alot to do, but expect to pay. The pools and fitness centers are free. However, we found the indoor pool to be crowded (4th of July week) and the outdoor pools to be lacking hot tubs. The pool was about a 20 minute walk from our unit which was not convenient. You can use several pools, but be prepared to drive.

We did take the "timeshare tour" which gave us a complimentary breakfast buffet for five (at the Water Park) and two activity cards that were $99 each. When I asked how long the tour was, I was told that depended on us, but to allow two hours. Evidently we visited a little too long with our guy because our tour was closer to 4 hours. I will say that Jimmy (our rep) was very friendly and professional. We felt he treated us with respect and we actually had an enjoyable time-(how odd is that??). We had to go through 3 other people at the end of the tour before we were "released" with a receipt confirming that we had earned our two activity cards. Overall, we were treated well by all.

We used our activity cards for lots of golf. We were able to walk nine holes for $2.50 each which can't be beat! The courses were in great shape! We also used the card to tour the civil war museum at New Market (free) and to tour Shendoah Caverns (free). Overall a very good deal.

We also used the activity cards for 1/2 off the price of a water park ticket. The water park was open from 10 AM to 10 PM (definitely not a 12 hour attraction). We have three teen boys and we spent two morning hours at the water park, followed by an afternoon hiking Shenendoah National Park, and finishing the day with 3 more hours at the water park. It was fun and clean. Be sure to bring your own towel - or you can always buy one from the resort.

Overall, we had a great week. The mattresses are the only reason I'm not rating this resort a 5!

I see so many people with complaints about Massanutten who wanted a 'free' vacation. If you go there for a time-share tour, do you really expect great service at a great resort? The place has become all about selling time shares. With so many cheap people looking to save money on vacation, you will not exactly be with high society folks. I will take my kids for the day to the waterpark (and put up with the hords of grungy people), but never stay for a extended time. The skiing is not great, but what do you expect for a small mountain in central Virginia? If you lower your expectations (and don't stay long), the place is OK. I would say Wintergreen is a small step up.

Booked a 2-bedroom unit through RCI timeshares.
Enjoyed the jacuzzi in the unit, hiking trails and the spa.
Husband and I had massages.
Did not use the pools, were usually too crowded, but it is Summer.
The resort is family friendly.
We refused to attend the time share presentation, even after being offered free meal and 100 dollar voucher. We've been through a few to know NOTHING is worth sitting through a timeshare presentation.
