“Quaint and relaxing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2014

Loved our stay at General Francis Marion hotel. It was a great boutique hotel conveniently located for a quick in and out stay. The room was exceptionally clean and bed very comfortable. The decor was pleasing. We did not partake in the hotels lovely bar and restaurant but it was inviting. Would stay again with no qualms. A continental style breakfast was provided although they provided scramble eggs to order. Service was real plates, no plastic. And best of sell, free parking.

Room Tip: Request an upper floor room for view. Not a good kid hotel. Enjoyed the Wolff BBQ down the street...

We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. The hotel has a great location. It is convenient to I-81 and downtown where you can walk to shopping and dining. We hope that the next time you stay with us, you will dine in our award winning restaurant, The Black Rooster. Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel on TripAdvisor.

We stopped for the night based on my Road Tripper app. This hotel is a cross between a B&B and a hotel we loved it. Clean, affordable, friendly staff and adorable. There free continental breakfast included homemade scrambled eggs.

I would deduct 1/2 a star for the mattress. If they upgraded the mattresses this place would be perfect.

Overall, we liked staying here. The folks in the lounge and the restaurant were without exception very friendly and attentive. Front desk guy was very helpful at check in too. They've done a great job in the reclamation of this old hotel. Our room was clean although the bed could have been more firm. If you want a room with a view, your choices are a bit limited-- be sure to ask about that when contacting the hotel. We had a Jr Suite on the fourth floor but unfortunately it only overlooked the bank next door about 15 ft away across an alley. Get a room on the top floor (the 5th) if possible. Finally, the main reason I did not rate this hotel higher, is that the heating/air conditioning control did not work at all. I mentioned this to the front desk person when checking and I got the distinct impression that nothing really would be done about it.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel on Trip Advisor. Our maintenance man has checked the thermostats in our rooms and has verified that they are all in working order. Our hotel is a green hotel, and that results in a 6-10 degree range of control in each room with the base temperature of each guest room controlled at the front desk. On your next stay with us, please don’t be uncomfortable; there is front desk staff on duty 24 hours a day and as you have noted, our staff is friendly, attentive and helpful. We look forward to serving you soon.

I reserved this hotel while in the area for business blindly at the recommendation of coworkers. Woah! I was not expecting this piece of restored beauty. The entry is amazing and surprisingly parking is plentiful. I quickly got checked in and went up to my room. The hallways were original and small and comfortably dark and sexy. It made me said I was here on business and not here with my husband. I got into the room and found a beautiful armoire, a 4 poster bed with beautiful bedding and an upholstered leather headboard with "FM" on it. Walking into the bathroom I almost died. The bathroom was so fresh and clean with tiny honeycomb tiles on the floor and what looked like an old claw foot type bathtub but a bit smaller. I even took a bath, which I NEVER do because I am so heebed out by hotel bathrooms, but this was so amazing I couldn't not bathe in it. Everything here had been lovingly restored and is gorgeous. There is also hot breakfast in the morning and a restaurant/bar with fresh local ingredients (trout!) and amazing wines. Don't miss this place. Even if it's a bit out of he way to stay here on. Your trip into Virginia or Tennessee do yourself a favor and come experience this beautiful place!

Room Tip: Rooms facing front or back or great, ask for as high up as you can go for a city view!

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel on TripAdvisor. We strive to exceed the expectation of each and every guest; and it is always gratifying to hear from a guest when we have succeeded in doing so. Our hotel and The Black Rooster Restaurant have received the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 2014 and AAA Approved Diamond Rating 2014. But the real achievement for each of us, is serving the guest. We hope that you and your husband will be able to return to our hotel; leaf peeper season is spectacular in the mountains.

We were riding our motorcycle in the Virginia mountains. Read about this hotel written by bikers who rode the Back of the Dragon road (#16). The best part of the hotel was Karen. Both on the phone and in person, she went out of her way to make our stay as good as possible.
She researched how to get on the Appalachian trail and on the Virginia Creeper hiking/biking trail. Much appreciated.
We were on the 5th floor, and had a special "Back of the Dragon" rate for bikers. That was nice.
But we got a little claustrophobic in the small room, not able to open windows or control the temperature. The mattress needed replacing - little to no support. The big, old-fashioned bathroom was amazing. Our view was great though and we enjoyed watching the 4th of July fireworks over the mountains.
Continental breakfast was very minimal. Scrambled eggs, but no meat and nothing sweet. There was toast and yogurt.

Our staff is invested in providing all of our guests an optimal level of service. There are thermostats in each room, and any member of our front desk staff, on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, will be happy to help you make your room temperature comfortable on your next stay. Thank you for recognizing the hotel's commitment to the careful, authentic restoration. In keeping with that authenticity, not all of our rooms are large. There are 36 unique guest rooms, and we offer accommodations of all sizes. Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel on TripAdvisor. We look forward to serving you in the future.

the General Francis Marion Hotel was a charming hotel with a most courteous and attentive staff. We spent 3 nights in one of the most comfortable beds i have ever experienced, and enjoyed the restaurants exquisite menu. We spent most of our evenings enjoying the veranda with friends and other guests of the hotel.
Although the rooms are a little smallish, the historic charm of the property oozed a feeling of warmth and comfort.
The location in the center of the pleasant little town of Marion was perfect for our motorcycle adventure, people watching, and just relaxing in general.
I highly recommend the General Francis Marion.

The hotel location, our comfortable beds, attentive staff and 1927 boutique charm all contribute to the perfect place for a motorcycle riding experience not to be missed. The hotel is elegant, yet relaxed and our in house restaurant, featuring the creations of Executive Chef Marcus A. Blackstone, is a culinary destination for many foodies. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and we look forward to welcoming you again soon.

The Francis Marion Hotel is a great place to stay and ride the Back of the Dragon. There is a restaurant on premise and several more within walking distance of the hotel. The front porch is a great place to chill at night and have some adult bevereages. The Hotel staff is excellent with Karen and Andre being the stand-outs for me this trip. I met Karen at the International Motorcycle Show in D.C. along with the Chamber of Commerce for the County. They brought info on the Back of the Dragon and the Hotel. Karen provided us with additional ride maps while we were there. The Saltville ride is one you might want to take. Highway 80 section of this ride is VERY technical. I went with 4 couples and we met 5 other couples who also got info at the IMS show. Everyone had great rides and the hotel was an excellent value. Thanks Karen for letting me share a great trip with my reprobate friends.

Room Tip: The Queen rooms are a good value,
