“Nice gem in SW Virginia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

Loved the historic hotel. The staff were friendly and we found our room to be a little small but very clean and quaint. Ate downstairs for breakfast and a late dinner one evening which was nice as well. Not much going on in Marion so spent most of our time in Abingdon and nearby parks.

Have stayed in the Marion area, in particluar at the General Francis Marion Hotel, many times for business travel. The hotel is always comfortable, clean, and quiet for a good night rest. Lindsey Kalber and her staff including the front desk and guest services have always been friendly and helpful whenever inquiries have been made or assistance is required. The staff in the restaurant and lounge also make a traveler feel welcome and a good place to relax and enjoy a meal and conversation. The Black Rooster hotel restaurant has a diverse menu with excellent quality food. It is the best hotel within a 1/2 hour driving radius of Marion.

We come to Marion every year for reunions and this year decided to try this neat boutique hotel. We booked a luxury queen room but from the reviews, I believe we got a standard. The room and the bathroom were small compared to other members of the family which received larger rooms on the same floor. Our room was comfortable and we slept well until a group of folks on our floor decided to party into the early morning hours. This wasn't the fault of the hotel yet you may want to check if any weddings or other events are going on before booking. The hallways can get very loud. The free morning breakfast was good, waffles, egg casserole, cereals, yogurt and toast. Everyone was friendly and helpful. I would stay here again and possibly see a show at the Lincoln which is next door. Give it a try, Marion is a nice little mountain town.

Room Tip: Room 304 was very small and a view of the roof. Go for 310 or something on the other side.

On a recent trip through the south, we discovered the town of Marion and the General Francis Marion Hotel. After hours of traveling, traffic delays, and horrendous weather, we knew we would never make a stopping point for the night and after a quick online visit to TripAdvisor discovered this little boutique hotel just off of I81. Lovingly renovated, it really is a little gem in the Virginia hIghlands. Comfortable large rooms, attentive staff and a very nice breakfast were included in the rate. The front desk clerk even brought us ice to the room because she didn't want us to have to wait while she checked in another patron. There is a cute game room just up the stairs from the reception area where you can sit and play a game of chess or take your coffee to the adjoining open air patio and take a look down main street. Make sure that you take a look at the original tiles in the game room! My two minor complaints were that they set the air conditioning a little warmer than I like and while you can press a button to set it a little cooler, that seems to be on a timer. They also button up the breakfast room at 10am, so when my husband went down a little before 10, he could only get cold cereal, but the rest of us enjoyed waffles made to order and great scrambled eggs! If you snooze, you lose! Give this little hotel a try!

We enjoyed our stay at the Francis Marion. Nice little quaint town, good for a stop over, maybe not a main attraction. We enjoyed a walk around the small down town, aged but interesting
architecture. The Black Rooster, the in hotel restaurant/bar, had an intriguing menu.
Enjoyed a nice glass of port. Our room was very comfortable and had plenty of room.
The hotel itself was very interesting in it's history and preservation. For the price,
we'll return.

This was a great hotel. We were passing through and found this hotel based on other reviews. The room we got was the Queen Standard room. It was on the smaller side, but the quality was great, the bathroom was redone very well and was very spacious. The hotel itself has a great restaurant that we got a free breakfast at the day after we checked in. It was a very cool place to stay and I would stay there again. Try Yummy Yummy down the street for some good Japanese food!

My brothers and I hike annually on the appalachian trail. Our family members stayed here while we were out. There is plenty of restaurants and a WalMart near by to purchase last minute supplies. The rooms were small, but comfortable. The 1920s era styling was a new twist for us. There is only one elevator and plenty of stairs. Some of the reviews I read before booking the reservation may have overstated the amount of stairs. Be warned if you are disabled or have bad knees, then you might not appreciate the stairs. Having been on the AT for a week I didn't mind a few more steps. The shower and bed very much appreciated.

Before we embarked on our trip in the Grayson Highlands, we ate (and drank) and the restaurant on the first floor. "The Black Rooster" the food was usual stuff, nothing really stand out.

The hotel staff was friendly and helpful when we needed to change the reservation at the last minute.

All in all, it was a good experience and I plan to bring my wife back to the area and we plan to stay at this hotel.
