Owner description: The Old City Cemetery, established in 1806, is one of the oldest public cemeteries in the United States still in use today. Mayors and other prominent civic leaders, along with the city's indigent and "strangers," are among the estimated 15,000 people buried here. Two thirds of those interred here are of African descent, both enslaved and free. The cemetery's Confederate section contains the graves of more than 2,200 soldiers from 14 states. Museums on the property interpret the diverse history of this rehabilitated graveyard and its inhabitants. Today, Old City Cemetery is the most visited historic site in the City of Lynchburg and is Central Virginia's most unique public garden. It is a Virginia Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

“Secrets of the Dead”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

Those who run the cemetery go out of their way to make the history of the place and those who (permanently) reside there, entertaining. There are specialized tours...One highlights the infamous enterred there, the shady ladies of Lynchburg, politicians, historical figures (and others) whose character/reputation survived their passing. There is the Pest House Medical Museum, and the Antique Hearse Collection. A small Chapel for services and a 'scatter garden' for the ashes of loved ones. I spent an interesting Sunday afternoon, just walking through and learned much about the city's past and the people who made it that way. I reccomend the tours and special events held there, to learn even more.

“Old City Cemetery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

A beautiful old cemetery that has confederate soldiers buried there. Beautiful grounds and buildings with surrounding old trees and buildings. A large collection of roses and alot of historic significance to the cemetery. The old Pest House for smallpox can be seen as well in the fall they have the Ghost Walk with stories and short plays being performed with stories of people who have been buried there. A worthwhile trip.

If you like old cemeteries, you'll enjoy this one- some of the graves go way back and its a very peaceful environment. There are a couple of interesting museums.

“The Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg has many things to offer a visitor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

The Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg has many things to offer a visitor. The grounds have the feeling of an arboretum and there is history at every turn. The Cemetery is famous for its rare old fashioned rose varieties and is a spectacular setting for wedding photo's. As for the history you can visit the Pest House museum and see what was done to care for the individuals how came down with Small Pox and there is an area where Civil War equestrian medicine is discussed. The Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 2000 Confederate soldiers who are buried in a special section of the cemetery. All in all the Old City Cemetery is a Gem that must be seen when visiting Lynchburg, VA.

“Pretty, engaging, somber, and historic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Unlikely as it may seem, the Old City Cemetery is one of the most interesting places in Lynchburg. There are Civil War graves here (and plenty of other graves from more recent times). But there are also small buildings from the nineteenth century here: a chapel, a "pest house," and more. Of particular interest to many is the abundance of old roses, seen at their best in May of each year.
