The exterior of the hotel is very nice. It is perhaps the most attractive new building in downtown Lynchburg. There is also an attached parking garage with the same decor. Access is not good, however, as there are steps but no ramp in the connection between the hotel and the parking garage.
The downtown location is okay during the day, and there are a few restaurants within walking distance. Once the downtown businesses close, however, you definitely feel less safe walking about. There are large groups of young adults loitering about the sidewalks. In addition, on one night of my stay, my two work associates and I (all men) were confronted by two men loitering immediately outside the hotel side entrance who tried to get us to "lend them" $100. They did not force the issue, but we certainly felt unsafe after that.
As for the interior, the lobby area is very nice. There is abundant marble and a big screen television. Once away from the lobby area, however, the quality of the interior drops substantially. The halls are shabby and there are numbers missing from the elevator buttons.
The condition of my room was somewhat mixed. The air conditioning did not work well and the room always felt very humid. The humidity may explain why the wallpaper was peeling from the walls in several places; in some places there were several inches of wallpaper curling away from the walls. The hotel does have free internet access, but wireless is only available in the lobby. To use the free ethernet in the rooms, you should bring your own cables as the hotel is not prepared to supply them.
Housekeeping is weak. After I checked in, I found trash from the previous occupant in the trash cans and the sink area was soiled. When I unfolded the bath mat, there appeared to be fecal matter on it.
The remainder of the staff at the hotel were great, however. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant wait staff, hostess and manager were fabulous. The last night of my stay there was a horrendous series of thunderstorms that flooded a portion of the first floor...including the restaurant. Staff quickly moved the tables to a new area and really did an outstanding job of insuring that all guests were not inconvenienced.
