“Beautiful and Romantic Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

The Inn is located on a private mountain and the views from the rooms as well as dining room are exquisite. Staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. A lovely breakfast was included with the room rate as was a cheese and wine hour every afternoon. We added dinner both evenings, which consisted of a three course meal. The food is absolutely amazing and very high quality. Our room was very clean, cozy and had a fire place as well as a private hot tub on the balcony. We spent Saturday hiking to the look-out tower that had a picnic table and rocking chairs. It was too cold to stay for long but well worth the hour hike to get there. The Inn way exceeded our expectations for quality, hospitality, comfort and privacy. I cannot wait to go back

Room Tip: Several rooms have private hot tubs on the balcony. The Inn's website has pictures of each room.

In our search for a B+B in the Virginia mountains and countryside, we had a few special requirements; nature, quiet, hiking trails, fireplace, log cabin style, no fussy Victorian stiff furniture, good healthy food, gracious hospitality and scenic and historic nearby sights. We found all of this, and beyond our expectations, at House Mountain Inn.
Because we went right after the Thanksgiving Holiday, we had the entire lodge to our selves! Tim, one of the owners, was so friendly and accommodating. Our time spent there was so perfect, I wrote a blog review about it and posted many photos! We ( my husband and I ) want to go back again soon, this time with all of our kids. They would love it too! We stayed for a quick getaway for our wedding anniversary. This is a larger than typical B&Bs which we liked because it affords a bit more privacy. There is no shared dining here - every couple sits at their own table. It really is lovely and completely immaculate as other reviewers have noted. We loved having our own hot tub. That is a very rare and wonderful amenity. They offer free wine and cheese in their pub each afternoon. The food is good, not gourmet. I would give five stars if the food had been a bit more tasty. A few more small touches like homemade croutons, fresh baked cookies (instead of oreos), and cheesecake that doesn't come from the store would have made all the difference between four stars and five stars. But the bottom line is that this is a truly special place that I highly recommend. We will definitely be returning.

We visited the inn because our daughter will be married there next fall. We totally loved it. The rooms are awesome, the decorations unique and carefully chosen and the hot tub was well enjoyed. We took the time to hike the mountain to the observation platform (the last part is quite challenging) and enjoyed delicious food before and after. We had plans to tour the area, but never quite made it to that because we just wanted to stay and enjoy. It was very nice to meet the family inn keepers. When we were there alone, they set up a table for us in the great room by the fireplace. Very nice.

Room Tip: Check out the layout to decide if you want mountain/valley/vista views or not.

My wife and I found this first class retreat as a base to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the changing seasons. We have lived around the world and found the service level above average and the attention to detail what we expect of an upscale hide-a-way. It is a place where you can meet new friends and cement old ones. We use it as a special treat to each other as often as we can. I am hoping to bring a group of long time friends together around the tranquil tables, the beautiful vistas, and the special attention in the near future. A cut above the ordinary and well worth the cost.

Room Tip: Be sure to get a view across the valley from your porch.

This is so much more then a B&B. The rooms are comfortable and sparkling clean, Fresh linens and each with a fireplace and spacious bath. The staff is warm and friendly aiming to make your stay as perfect as possible. You feel like family. The meals are exceptional. Wonderful touches in pre breakfast pastries and coffee and wine and cheese happy hour. Snacks and drinks self serve for your entire stay. The vista's are beautiful. Our second visit with friends and in June will be our second visit as guests for a wedding. Guests tend to want to talk and share time together. We all chipped in for a bottle of champagne for newlyweds. We miss it already.

The reviews here stating how wonderful this place is (along with the pictures) do not do this place justice! I've been to a few BnB on the east coast of the Mid-Atlantic Regional area and I have to say, this place was tops! This was one of the best weekend get-a-ways I've ever had. We stayed here for a romantic get-away in January of 2012 and have been searching for a place to visit next and can't seem to find one as nice. We planned on returning but I thought I'd try some other BnB's (within a 3 hour driving radius) just to venture out. I'm having a hard time finding one that can even meet the status of House Mountain Inn ("HMI") so we'll be back sooner than later.

Here's a summary:

PRO'S:

• Hosts were amazingly friendly, nice and & funny!
• Secluded (the closest town to dine and shop is a good 5-7 mile drive away).
• Clean - not a stain, bug, mold, etc. anywhere. It seems to have held its "brand new" feel even after a few years.
• Modern (but rustic) and very cozy.
• HUGE rooms and cabin (pics can't capture how huge this place is and how nice the rooms are).
• Private hot tubs on the decks are wonderful! Private is not an exaggeration here. Some places say 'private' but sometimes that is misleading. HMI's outdoor hot tubs are arranged just for each individual room/couple. And we didn't hear a peep from other guests.
• Food was delicious! (Full gourmet breakfast). They even offer to make something special for you if you have different dietary needs. As others have stated, dinner is available at an additional charge and the locals do in fact come up to dine so that's a nice bonus. And it too is delicious.
• The main bar of the BnB is fully stocked with popular/premium brands. We missed the happy hours but that is a very nice touch to offer guests.
• 24 hour snacks available for all guests (another nice touch).
• Gorgeous scenery!

Basically it’s a cozy BnB with nice 5 star resort touches throughout. The owners really thought of everything for the picky traveler.

Cons: NONE!

If you're looking for antique, small, urban, this is not the place for you. It's secluded, spacious and modern yet still cozy and charming like most BnB's.

We only saw other guests during breakfast and dinner. The place was fully booked but other than meals, we never heard a peep from other people.

We wanted to go horseback riding (stables on the premises) but it was 20 degrees during our stay so we opted not to do that but will on our return.

I could go on and on about how nice this BnB is. It's a bit on the pricey side to stay here but very well worth it.

Room Tip: Watch the stars from your private deck hot tub!
