“Bedbugs!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

This was our second time staying at the Howard Johnson - Lexington. Accommodations the first time (in July) were reasonable for the money so there wasn't hesitation booking our second trip. Unfortunately, when we returned home after our stay in August there was an unexpected surprise. My husband and I began itching and discovered bites all over. After a thorough examination we found live bugs on our body! A family member in the medical field confirmed what we thought....bedbugs. After pulling them all off we took pictures of them and even recorded the little critters scurring around on a paper plate. I immediately called the hotel to report our findings to the manager on duty. It was later in the evening so the GM was not there. I left a message for him to call me as soon as possible. He returned my call 2 days later and left a message saying they were going to have the professionals inspect the room. The inspector called me directly to advise that the room was fully inspected and he found nothing. I politely disagreed as he discredited anything I said. I called back to request a formal report/letter with their findings and had to leave a voicemail. I have received nothing. I called the hotel to speak with the GM and he was conveniently not available so I left a message for him to call. Well, that was 4 days ago and still no return call. So much for customer service. I suppose since the "expert" didn't find anything 2 days after I reported the incident, the GM wrote us off. You could not pay me to stay at this hotel again. The cheap price of the room is not worth the bugs we brought back.

As parents of a VMI student we have already traveled to Lexington often. This is our second time staying at the HJI. The first time I was much more impressed, we were on the 3rd floor if my memory serves me correctly. This time we were on the ground floor, which was very convenient using the sliding glass door to move our stuff into the room, BUT the rooms (we had gotten two) needed much more upkeep than I had remembered of the visit back a year ago. It is definitely quiet, clean, and friendly, and we will go again, but just know that there is some need for upgrades and repairs in some of the rooms. Other than that, great visit!

PS-The breakfast leaves a bit to be desired compared to other hotels in the area, but then when in Lexington, you can enjoy so many different restaurants!

Room Tip: The rooms on the ground floor seemed to have more wear and tear on them.

Stayed here on our drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway. Great room-large, clean, bug-free. Nice looking outdoor pool (we did not use). Friendly staff, great breakfast. WONDERFUL price through tripadvisor.com. Would recommend you stay here.

Older hotel but very clean, with friendly front desk staff. Stayed here overnight on a trip north. Easy on/off the highway. Checked in after midnight - but front desk was staffed and ready for check-in. Beds were very comfortable. Room had a balcony, which was a nice plus.

The beds were the most comfortable we have ever experienced in a motel. It was quiet and we had a great night's sleep. Joel at the front desk was very helpful.....and the view of the Blue Ridge was outstanding.

We found this motel through a coupon book and were pleasantly surprised. It was a rainy afternoon and time to stop, so we took a chance. On a clear day, the view from this hilltop property must be amazing. Since it wasn't clear, we opted for a room on the back side because it was very close to a door by the outside pool and we wouldn't have to carry our bags far in the light rain. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and larger than many, and we had everything we needed. We discovered a good Mexican restaurant just across the street at the Days Inn, so did not need to go to town in search of food. With the coupon, including tax, the king-bedded room cost us $55.60. This was the first time at a Howard Johnson's in many years, but now we're encouraged to try them again!
