Eager for a drive in the country on one of the nicest Sundays this year, Mrs Too and I headed northwest and crossed the Potomac River to Leesburg Virginia via White’s Ferry. The dairy farm where I grew up is right on U.S. 15 about 20 miles south of Leesburg, so I once knew Leesburg, in fact almost all of Loudon County, quite well. Obviously, in a sprawling metropolitan area such as Washington, a lot can change in a few years. Imagine how different Leesburg is to me after fifty years now. I have been back any number of times, but not so often recently.
Happily, the center of the “old town” hasn’t lost any of its down South charm, although the names on the buildings and shops are different. Certainly back in the 50's no one felt any need for a Cajun restaurant, but we were drawn here largely by the TripAdvisor reviewers of Cajun Experience.
Completely undaunted nowadays by the less than imposing outer appearance of a restaurant, we made our way to the parking lot and thence to the outdoor patio behind the building. We found ourselves among a cosmopolitan and diversified party of enthusiastic diners attended to by bright and cheerful servers. Ours promptly served our drink order and went over the menu with us.
Mrs Too had the jambalaya, and pronounced it enjoyable, but not as good as hers. Any number of diners might say the same thing, as the ratio of jambalaya recipes to kitchens is said to be just about 1:1. I started with raw oysters and a basket of hushpuppies. The menu states that they serve Gulf oysters, but I was left feeling that mine were Bluepoints, very tasty but a little smaller. A surprise was the cocktail sauce served with them. Ninety percent of the time, I have to doctor it up to suit my own taste, but they nailed it right off the bat. The hushpuppies were awesome, seasoned just so, uniformly round, and fried to the second. I finished with a bowl of fabulous chicken and sausage gumbo, washed down with an absolutely perfect Hurricane.
I can assure you that this will not be our last meal at this most welcome addition to Leesburg fare.
