“a maze ing!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2012

The conference center is in an amazing location amongst huge trees and built to be swallowed by nature but the building itself is a maze. getting to your room includes going up and down elevators, walking along endless underground corridors and trying to work out exactly which block, on which floor on which continent your room is.
The Center is used by Government agencies, army personnel and the like. The rooms are tiny tiny and like student dorm rooms. Walls are painted cinder block, concrete everywhere. The dining hall is cavernous with buffet stations and a conveyor belt to take your empty trays.
Do not honey moon here and, if you value your sanity stay in somewhere more homey!!

Room Tip: no such thing

Hi Archie,

Thank you for taking the time to review The National Conference Center. We appreciate your kind words about the retreat-like outdoor setting. We only accept non-transient business and we're a purpose built conference center; fortunately our guests are business travelers such as yourself. We agree, it's not the environment for a honeymoon; it's intended for corporate and organizational training and meetings. In terms of way-finding, I always tell guests not to worry about the street names and just focus on the numbers. For instance, N4.250 is north building > fourth floor > room 250. I hope this helps you during your next stay. Thank you for the high-rating on location; we're happy to hear you value the distraction-free environment near DC.

Thank you again for your feedback, Archie. We hope to have you back again soon.

Sincerely,

Sarah Vining

Staff is great and always a warm smile and hello as you navigate the maze. Spiders all over window in hallway kept me creeped out during stay.

Hi,

Thank you so much for your feedback. It's always great to hear how helpful our staff is; it's said that the architectural layout was structured this way to build camaraderie among colleagues walking to meetings or classes together. Thank you for letting us know about the hallway corridor window. I just put in a work order to have it cleared.

Thank you again. We look forward to your next stay with us.

This venue is not only excellent for a conference but the rooms are comfortable, the meals are outstanding. With 2 chefs overseeing the meal preparation, all aspects of the culinary experience while at the NCC are covered very well. The staff is eager to assist any guest. Many of the employees have been working there for many years and are happy there. This is reflected in their attitude and helpfulness.

Room Tip: The suites are a little more spacious than the regular rooms but all are comfortable.

The National Conference Center was designed specifically for trainings; however, they attempted to make learning more palatable with wonderful meals, many amenities, and a courteous, helpful staff. It is a very large center, and hallways and tunnels connect all the buildings, which is a plus as you do not need to go outside, if you do not care to. The one downside is the many tunnels and hallways with limited directions, which are not very clear. Staff members must be accustomed to the numerous requests for directions and assistance, but they were very kind, and many walked with me to ensure I got to where I needed to go. Everyone greeted me with a smile. The food, served cafeteria style, was exceptional. They had many unusual offering for those who wanted to try something new, but there were equally as many choices of traditional American fare. At breaks from the meetings, refreshments were available, and fresh fruit was in abundance.

Room Tip: All rooms are very small, designed for work. Some have only showers, while others have a bath/showe...

I have visited the NCC five times now in the past six months for various training sessions. Each visit has been unique but the consistent thread has been the wonderful staff and great food. The facilities are perfect for small or large conference gatherings and offer myriad breakout and plenary rooms. Attendees are also able to use the gyms to keep up exercise routines and it is close enough to Leesburg to enjoy the attractions. A good deal!

Room Tip: All the rooms have a view of the grounds so you won't go wrong there.

Stayed here one night for a conference and received some of the most pleasant customer service ever! I would prefer not to stay here for conferences, however, as it is most confusing to get around. Food was yummy!

Where to start...
First take this review with a grain of salt because this place isn't really a hotel, it is a conference center that caters to large groups of military folk and happens to have sleeping quarters. If you are visiting the area for pleasure I would avoid this place like the plague. For a company looking to book an inexpensive conference center you can probably get a lot of bang for your buck here.

1) National: F
For a place that calls itself the NATIONAL Conference Center and caters so heavily to US Military folk I was HIGHLY disturbed that nearly everything in my hotel room was made in a foreign country (mostly China).

2) Rooms: D
The room I stayed in was more similar to jail cells I've seen on prison tours than a hotel room. Cramped, small window, and not comforting. The bed in the room I stayed in faced the door which had a 1/4 inch gap around it that seemed to flood my room with light. With all the room lights turned off it made the door look like something out of a horror movie with an eerie white light all around it.

3) Common areas: F
The furniture throughout the facility was identical to the junk they had in lounges at the college I went to - it looked like it dated back to the 1950's. All the charm of a nuclear fallout facility or a bunker for the apocalypse.

4) Dining: F
To get from certain sleeping areas to the cafeteria (yes, the all you can eat type where you use trays) you have to wander through the unadorned white walled underground labyrinth. In it's defense the halls are very well lit and clean...The food is what you'd expect from a school cafeteria.

5) Grounds/Location: A
The place is on a great piece of land and they haven't messed it up. About 3 miles away (15$ taxi) is an Outlet Store area. About 1 mile away are a few shops and a great little cafe called "Not Your Average Joe's". The hotel has an airport shuttle which runs $20 PER PERSON. A taxi to the airport is only $30 so if you are going with colleagues take the taxi.

6) Conference Center: C
There were 2 conferences going on when I was staying here and they.competed with each other for signage real estate. Not a lot of thought seems to have gone into the governance of where conference signage should be posted, and what is appropriate. One hallway leading to the 2 conferences was littered with signage from both conferences and seemed disorganized and cluttered.

Room Tip: Stay near Black Olive, landmarks helpful in maze
