We had a very good holiday at the Baia Grande. I have read reviews that said the hotel was a bit tired, but thats perhaps a slight exaggeration, it is maybe a season or two off needing a modest refurb, but it is only superficial. There are a few to many chipped cups and plates, and a couple of areas that need some paint, but with a little investment minor quibbles could be addressed.
Overall it is a refined and comfortable hotel, where the staff demonstrate the reserve one associates with Algarvians. I know that some travellers now seem to expect hotels to entertain them 24/7, and the staff to be more exuberant but in twenty years thats rarely been my experience of the Portugese, who are never less than polite and friendly, but not in an in your face way. Relax and settle in to the pace and refinement and you will have a wonderful time.
The food was good, and prepared with an obvious level of care that some 5 star hotels could learn from. The staff were quietly efficient and attentive, although the wine prices were a fraction high, with the premium on corkage being about 300% higher than the retail value of the wine. But do not let that put you off, as the overall experience was really good for a four star.
Around the hotel are just a few restuarants if you stay B&B, but the hotel lay on a bus to either the beach at Gale or into town, so there are lots of options and choices for dining and other entertainment. This hotel works equally well for the traveller who doesn't want to drive, or those that get a hire car, but for me it is a perfect fit if you prefer the latter; for the same cost as a taxi transfer from Faro, we had a nippy little Citreon C3 and enjoyed all the Algarve could offer and exploring hiden coves and beaches, on just over half a tank of petrol.
