“Great Get-Away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

Elegant, cool old hotel. Great food and drink on property, though expensive and if we stayed longer we would venture off the resort. Hiked some great, and tough trails, and husband mountain biked some really steep roads, and the wider trails. Amazing nature and views around the resort. I did a morning in the spa and had a very good mud wrap and massage, top quality. The spa includes free access to the unique "Thermal Suite" and absolutely lovely outdoor "Spa Garden" with an hour's treatment, really maximizing the experience. And the spa building is both historical and beautifully modernized.

This would be a great spot for a family reunion, older couples, a quiet getaway, and families with younger kids (the pool is SO cool for kids). Maybe not such a a great spot for teens, unless they are the cool sort who will hike, shoot bow & arrow, and try falconry (actually - teens might really like it!) Definitely not for the 20 something Club crowd...

My recent stay at The Homestead was somewhat disappointing as I expected to be staying at my old familiar place. It has changed and is not as good as it used to be in many ways - but it is better in some. True some interior rooms in the old section have been updated and there have been cosmetic changes. Still the hotel is not the value and isn't as classy as it was previously. The new Spa is absolutely gorgeous but is only available to a guest if you have a booked service for that day. Otherwise there's a $40 per day fee to use. Cheesy policy. Also - you now pay a $10.00 per day fee to park your car. Really? It feels as though there are just too many ways to get another dollar from you. The hotel is now owned by Omni.

We have been to The Homestead several times before and this has been one of our best experiences. I am so happy that the Omni is restoring this beautiful resort to the quality that is was when we first started coming here. I like that they have maintained many of the traditions, such as Afternoon Tea, formal dining with dance ensemble in the Main Dining Room for evening ( coat & tie for men, nice pants or dress for women) wonderful breakfast buffet and all the wonderful activities. We played golf twice and spent an afternoon in the new Spa Garden. We enjoyed lunch in the Jefferson Bar and at Rubino's. We had one meal at Jefferson's Restaurant which was very good. Service was perfect everywhere we went.
We had a wonderful romantic weekend even with many families at the resort. We did not experience loud families and all the children we saw were well behaved. In fact we really enjoyed watching little girls and boys dancing with their parents and grandparents in their fine clothes on Saturday evening. It was wonderful seeing teenagers do the same. It was also nice to see the children playing lawn games and roasting marshmallows each evening. These are activities that are not available to those living in urban areas. Those are memories in the making for these families and we talked about how we must also bring our family back.
The Omni has added their own touch. Our evening turn down included complimentary bottles of water and emptying trash. The beds were wonderfully comfortable and our room was very clean and still decorated in the wonderful colonial period, with the addition of flat screen TV's and free wifi. We liked the addition of Jefferson's with it's beautiful outside dining. If you wonder where the Presidents portraits are they have found a place in the Lobby Bar. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: We definitely prefer the rooms with preferred views. The West Wing was fine for us, but if you have...

This is a beautiful hotel and the staff is wonderful and friendly. I visited 20 years ago long before Omni purchased the property and I enjoyed this stay much better. It was much more friendly with better amenities. When I got lost on the hiking trail, George (who has worked at the Homestead for 38 years!) got me back on the trail. What a wonderfully nice man he was and it was a pleasure to meet him. The breakfast was delicious. The Spa Garden and Aqua Thermal area was great, too. Our room was comfortable and the afternoon tea was fun. There were many nice public areas to sit and savor the experience of being here.

Steeped in history and beautifully restored, The Homestead offers much to all its guests. Being differently abled, it is a joy to return year after year to a place that is truly a second home. There are very few places where one's preferences are remembered and where one is always welcomed. The grounds are so beautiful, offering lots of activities as well as places of peace and serenity

Beware of being assigned "no view accommodations." Self parking is crowded and is long walk from Hotel. No shuttle service to parking lot if one chooses no valet service. Be prepared for pricey "resort fees," and recreation fees for almost everything. Food and food service personnel are excellent. There is friendly staff.

The grounds are very nice, there are a lot of activities available. The Bell staff was very friendly and helpful. The resort seems to be gearing towards families. I would have liked a nice adult outdoor pool close to the main building. Maybe I just could not find it. They did have a spa, which I did not participate. We had a top of the line room with a view in the tower historic building. It lacked a couple things I expect when paying $375 a night: no place in the bathroom to even put your toothbrush with a small stand alone vintage looking sink; shower/tub was old; no magnifying mirror; turn down service happened only one night with no chocolate, cookie or poem. The window view in the room would have been lovely, except the window was very dirty. The main dining room lacked any personality at all. Breakfast cost us nearly $75 for 2. I agree with many posts; go to the Country Café down the road. We had a great breakfast there for $15. We chose dinner at The Waterwheel instead of the hotel and are very happy we did. I hope this lovely historic hotel can be brought back to compete with the best. It has a way to go.
