“Great family resort in the Virginia mountains”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013 via mobile

Just spent the last couple of days with extended family. 19 in total and it was awesome! The hotel is over a 100 years in age and has some maintenance to be done but saw alot or repairs going on and cleaning. The new water park was fantastic and the new Jefferson room was great. The kids loved the new arcade and so did the adults. The spa looked phenomenal and the food was out of this world. The service was impeccable and Woody Pettus is iconic as the homestead tower. Woody was unbelievable with our group and a true treasure

We are thrilled you chose The Homestead to spend time with your family of 19! As you found out, The Homestead has something to offer for all ages. The arcade you mentioned is our new “DownTime” Family Game Area with mini bowling, pool tables, air hockey, Wii, Xbox and arcade games. Woody Pettus is indeed a Homestead legend and celebrated 50 years at The Homestead not long ago! Thanks for sharing your comments and we look forward to welcoming you back again and again.

My husband had been to the Homestead before and told me to be prepared to do nothing. It was just a relaxing place to visit and unwind. True. It was, but if you play golf, tennis, like to walk, fly fish, work out, eat, hit the hot springs, etc, this is a great place. First of all, the drive up was beautiful. We have stayed in most of the old resorts throughout the U.S. and never tire of the drive up appeal. I can only imagine what would make it better is either leaf season or Christmas. We got there late, like 6:30, and so we didn't get a room with a stellar view; however, the room was wonderful. The view was all that was missing. We felt a little like second class citizens when we were banished to a lower floor but it turned out alright, especially the last morning when we trooped off to the hot springs for a soak. It was off the east wing where our room was, and we didn't have to ride an elevator. We took the history tour the morning after we arrived, and it was extremely interesting, but we are history buffs. The whole hotel is tastefully decorated, not quite as whacko as the Greenbrier, and the piano player in the lobby was a nice, sophisticated touch. The service was excellent, the food was great, and the activities were plentiful. Would go back in a heartbeat. The only negative about cleanliness was that the two and a half days that we were there, there was a dirty wineglass and a French fry in the little hallway leading out of our wing. With 1,000 employees, you would think someone would have gotten those things.

Room Tip: You want a room above floor 11 which is lobby level. We were on 10 and had reservations booked a ye...

Thank you for sharing your review and we are delighted that we exceeded your expectations. We invite you to return in the fall as the leaves are going to be beautiful this year. Christmas is a very special time as well as our decorations are absolutely stunning. We apologize for the housekeeping issue in the hall and this most certainly will be addressed with our staff. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon so you may experience more of what The Homestead is all about.

My husband and I signed up for The Homestead's "Stay and Play" package. The front desk staff could have been more welcoming, but, because they had a lot of check outs the day we arrived, they were very accommodating and upgraded us to a deluxe room with a large patio. The hotel is showing some wear but, so am I (and I'm only 65 !). We enjoyed playing both the Old Course and the Cascades (be sure to take your bug spray - the gnats were awful). We very much enjoyed the al fresco dining at The Jefferson Restaurant. The spa looked very nice, but I was disappointed to learn that it was an extra $40.00 to use any of the facilities. So, instead I opted for a wonderful lap swim in their indoor pool (not part of the spa) - beautiful sunlight shining through the windows reflecting in the water. Very relaxing stay. We had a couple of minor issues which were taken care of by the housekeeping staff in a very friendly and prompt manner.

Room Tip: If you don't like hearing air conditioning units running constantly, take ear plugs ! All the o...

Thank you for visiting The Homestead with your husband on the “Stay and Play” package. We very much appreciate your observations and suggestions, and are delighted that you enjoyed your golf games and the alfresco dining at our new restaurant, Jefferson’s. Aquavana and the Spa Garden are complimentary with any 50-minute or longer SpaClub services. Without a service, there is a charge to access the Spa Garden and Aquavana. However, the nominal fee includes many enjoyable amenities such as a Reflexology River Walk, the Historic Hot Springs Pool and Mineral Waters; Co-Ed Finnish Sauna; Hot & Cold Showers; Hot Springs Deluge Shower; Whirlpool; and heated Outdoor Pool. Aquavana is an exclusive European-inspired oasis with a complete suite of thermal spa cabins that expose the body to a contrast of hot and cold temperatures, all enhanced by creative use of light, sound and scent. It includes Herbal Laconium; Aromatic Steam Room; “The Chill;” Experiential Rains; Heated Loungers, and more. We hope that you will return in the future and take advantage of the Spa Garden and Aquavana experience.

This is a great historic destination hotel located in astonishing Virginia countryside. Something you should experience at least once in your lifetime. I felt at home from the moment I entered my room. Service is good and the place feels like you have taken a time machine back to the past (awesome feeling). Jefferson pools will sure make me come back, the pool was an experience I can probably not match anywhere else. Remember, if you like contemporary luxuries and don't care for history or the old grand art of spiritual retreat leaving, please avoid these two gems.

Beautiful hotel and grounds. Golf would have been great except for swarming knats which invaded ears, eyes, nose and mouth, especially around the greens on both courses.Food is good; best value and quality turned out to be at sam snead's tavern where we sat at the bar. Tea time was lovely each afternoon with relaxing music.

Our hotel stay was wonderful; we loved the entire experience and would definitely go back (budget permitting!). The entire staff was especially warm and friendly and made us feel very welcome. Afternoon tea was a special delight and so relaxing. We purchased a Bed and Breakfast package and absolutely loved the wonderful breakfast in the main dining room. This is a beautiful, historic property with amazing detail and architecture. Saving our nickels and dimes so that we can return!

We stayed at The Homestead as part of a golf vacation this past summer. It was on our "bucket list" of golf destinations.

Checking in was interesting. The front desk was a bit chaotic, with long lines. We attributed that to the transition of Omni Resorts' recent acquisition of The Homestead, a few months earlier. We hope that was the reason.

Our first room was on the ground level. Around 10:00 p.m. on the first night, a very loud clanging/banging sound (think tire iron on metal pipes) started up. It was coming from the boiler room level below our room. Maintenance Dept. did not when if or when the sound would stop. We had to have our room changed.
Long story short, the room change was disappointingly not smooth at the Front Desk end of things. We finally (after waiting 45 minutes for help that never showed up) had to take matters into our own hands by traipsing down to the lobby, unassisted, with all our luggage. We knew that would get their attention and our room re-assignment expedited. After that, all was smooth sailing.

The next room was fine, very spacious (as was the first). The mattress on the bed was wonderful --- soft while giving very good back support. Great mattress! Our rating of the "Rooms" is based on our second room. All the walls are very thick, so the rooms are quiet.

We loved the hotel itself. The front porch with ample seating and rocking chairs was where we spent our afternoons, after a day of golf. The lobby is enormous with more seating areas. The surprising thing (to us) is that guests were actually using the seating, just like the old days! There is a bar in the lobby; actually, it is in a room off the lobby, well-marked but unobtrusive. Afternoon tea every day with nice cookies and live piano music in the lobby.

Breakfast and dinner in the Main Dining Room were excellent, both in service and food quality. Breakfast offering covered anything one could imagine.

Jefferson's restaurant has very good food and table service. We did not like how the tables for two are set up, and unfortunately that was the size table we had for our one meal at Jefferson's. They are set up in two-rows, but tiered with no privacy or sound divider, at all. Therefore, the table next to ours was 18- to 24-inches higher than us and I could hear every. single. word. of. their. conversation. That was our only complaint but it made a huge difference in the enjoyment factor.

Canyon Ranch Cafe has good food and is more on the health-conscious side of dining. The menu lists the following: calories • carbohydrate grams • protein grams • fat grams • fiber grams • sodium miligrams and gluten-free items. Servings are small-ish but extremely tasty.

We enjoyed the Cascades and the Old Course golf courses. They were very pretty while still challenging.

All the employees we encountered were polite, friendly and helpful.

The Homestead is definitely a great destination for families. There seemed to be a plethora of activities for children. The swimming pool area was great, with two slides and well life-guarded.
