“Austria Chef/owner does the best wiener schnitzel on this side of the Atlantic.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2014

I get here on business periodically and this is one of my consistent favorites. The Chef's heritage and his partner's (I think) are both evident. Excellent schnitzels, strudels, spatzel, hot potato salad, soups/ bisques and other specialties are side by side with a handful of Indonesian dishes. It's in a strip mall but for some reason it's not at all noisy. Great selection of beers cheerfully served and afterwards great desserts. Great food, nice people and a consistently good experience.

“Fun, festive Maifest evening”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2014

We have eaten here a number of times and happened to come in during the Maifest, a celebration similar to Oktoberfest only in May. The wait staff wore German dresses and the band lead had on his lederhosen. We sang along with the German songs and even John Denver's Take Me Home, Country Roads (!) The mixed salad of German potato salad, carrots, cucumbers, and red cabbage was very good. The jagerschnitzel, weinerschnitzel, and stuffed cabbage were also tasty. Only slightly disappointing was the server/owner who was a bit harried with the service and seemed to rush off before we even could finish a sentence.

“Best food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

This place doesn't look like much, but the looks are misleading. The food here is wonderful. Must try: jagerschnitzel, wienerschitzel, spaetzel, german potato salad, Swedish meatballs, and probably anything else on the menu because it's all good!

“Our Local Favorite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2014

We love the atmosphere, especially when they have an accordion player and folks are singing along. Family and friends we take always compliment the food. I love the schnitzel, and have a hard time choosing anything else; my wife loves the Sea Bass, but she tries everything and likes it. It's a fantastic family operated café with a good selection of old world brews. Definitely one of Herndon's little gems.

“Very Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

We had been to this restaurant many years ago, so we thought we would try it again. The menu is primarily German, with a number of Thai influences and a little Italian thrown in (very odd combination). It seemed they were trying to be too many things, although they seem to specialize in German food. We decided to go that route -- I had sauerbraten, which was not bad. My husband was going to order weinerschnitzel, but the server mentioned that the veal was a little dry and suggested the pork schnitzel, so that's what he ordered. When it came, he had a plate full of very flat, breaded objects. It was difficult to tell what was a schnitzel an what was a potato pancake -- they all looked the same. There was a small cup of gravy for dipping or pouring, but it wasn't nearly enough. He said that the meat was quite dry and had very little taste. The potato pancakes were okay.

The atmosphere was also lacking. They had track lighting that could have made the restaurant seem a little more intimate, but they chose to use the ceiling can lights, producing an overall glare, and certainly not a feeling of being in a nice restaurant. The menu prices were reasonable, but for $15 - $20 for entrees, we had hoped for a little nicer atmosphere. They did have tablecloths and cloth napkins.

My suggestion would be, if you plan to try this restaurant, have the server recommend the best dish on the menu and try that. Otherwise, there are too many other choices in the area.
