“Camera Missing From Room”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2007

I was booked to stay at the Holiday Inn Express Herndon for 6 days (long business trip) but canceled my reservation after 3 days. I had my camera go missing from my room. I spoke with the manager and he mentioned that it was clearly marked in the room that valuables were to be left in a safe at the front desk. The "clear" marking was a single sentence in very small font on the rate information note that is located on the back of the door. The manager did speak with his staff but to no avail. No apologies or regrets were given by the manager although another staff member at the front desk was helpful and apologetic. She even offered to call the police (which I didn't since I was leaving the country in a few days to return home).

The hotel was comfortable and clean otherwise and the breakfasts were decent , but the missing camera has left a bitter taste that will not go away.

My husband stayed there for the week the last week in August for business. The price is right compared to the high dollar hotels in Reston. I flew in on Thursday and couldn't believe how many shops and restaurants were in the area of the hotel. The room was clean but a little small and the bathroom for 2 people was too tiny. Also, for the price it would have been nice to have a small pool and spa. Still, the staff was nice and the breakfast was fine. If you want some local action, go to the Hard Times Cafe were you can shoot pool, play cards, talk to the locals, and get some great food to go. The Holiday Inn Express is just 5 minutes from the airport, it's an ideal location for the area.

We stayed here for one night before travelling down to Myrtle Beach the next morning. Precious on reception was lovely and really helpfull. The courtesy bus was great, they take you anywhere in the local area up to a 5 mile radius which means you can go shopping or to the movies with a free taxi. You just call them up and they collect you to bring you back again GREAT!! It is directly across the road from a Safeway and i think a Kmart along with a number of other smaller shops. We chose to walk about 10 mins down the road to the Outback Steakhouse which we love, well worth the walk. It was a lovely hot evening but the airconditioning unit in the room was so quiet you could easily have it on all night. The breakfast was great and the cinnamon rolls are the BEST! United Airlines crew stay at this hotel which is a good sign as airlines only book good hotels for their staff. In the morning we were going back to the airport to get our hire car and on past trips have had to get the hotel bus and then the hire car bus, this time Holiday Inn Express called us a complimentary cab and took us straight to Alamo. Excellent service.

I got this hotel through Hotwire at less then $40. The location is near Dulles Airport, about 25 minutes from Washington DC. There are many shops and restaurants of all kinds in the area. Check in was fast. The room was nice sized and spotless. The only downside was that the bathroom was a little small. The sink is located outside the bathroom near the entrance.

Amenities include a fitness center and free hot breakfast, which wasn't bad. There is also a computer in the hotel for guests. As a priority member I was given the option of a free movie, a day pass to a fitness club or 500 Priority Club points. This was given even though I booked on Hotwire.

I give high marks to the Holiday Inn Express.

Staff is very courteous and helpful. The breakfasts are great as usual for Holiday Inn Express.
However, there are two downsides. 1) Pertains to the previous review about 3rd floor being only 1/2 non-smoking. I requested non-smoking NOT on 3rd floor when I booked and they obliged. While there I used stairwell a lot and 3rd floor does smell when passing it in the stairwell. If there are still any non-smoking rooms on that floor avoid it if possible. 2) All ICH hotel group hotels now include a clause when booking that there are no cancellations or refunds for any reason. I booked anyway and hoped my trip didn't change. During my stay this was put to the test by a patron that had to check out early and they would not wave the fee even though he had to cancel part of his stay for an emergency. The staff was nice as usual, but couldn't do anything, so they gave him a corporate phone number, which he called right then and wound up in a heated debate on the phone to no avail. He was a frequent traveller with them and was so upset he vowed not to stay with them anymore. I wanted to relate that story so people were aware they don't bend on that policy. I would like to also thank the person that put the review up warning of the 3rd floor, it was greatly appreciated. Basically, this hotel is very good except for the two things mentioned above. If you're ok with both of those you won't be disappointed.

  • Liked — cleanliness and the deluxe continental breakfasts
  • Disliked — no hot tub / spa, pool, or weight room
  • Tips/Secrets — Avoid 3rd floor if you're a non-smoker

I read the reviews before I booked my room, and I have to say overall I'm very satisfied with my stay here. What I love the most is the comfortable bed (it gives me enough support which I usually only get in a 4-star hotel) and nice pillows. The linens are nice and clean, and they give you plenty of towels. I stayed on the 4th floor, which seems to be the floor of executive rooms. There is a small refig and microwave in the room, and that did add additional convenience during my stay. The breakfast was nice too -- plenty of choices I don't like fruits they offered. It is not freshly cut (you can tell that), and not sure if because of that, it tasted different.

Another thing I'd like to mention is that the sink is not in the bathroom, instead it's in the hallway (right next to the door). So if more than 1 person stay in the room, it will be kind of noisy if one person wants to use the sink while the other one is asleep.

There are plenty of restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance of this hotel, which makes it convenient for both business and family travel. I'll come back again...

This hotel was decent, clean, nicely furnished, etc. except for one thing: Though I had specifically requested a non-smoking room, we were placed on the third floor, which is only half non-smoking. Ha Ha. The hallway reeked, and our room had a slight smoke odor. Some doors on our floor had non-smoking symbols on them, but not ours - only a placard in the room stating that it had been "cleaned for non-smokers" and that a $50 cleaning fee would be imposed if a guest smoked in the room. Then at night, smoke from the hallway was sucked into our room via the cracks under and around the door. Apparently, all the other floors are completely non-smoking. Because the hotel was full, and because we made the mistake of checking in then rushing off to dinner before inspecting the room, we couldn't change rooms.
The staff was friendly, helpful and courteous, and the free breakfast was decent (though 90% carb - hard boiled eggs and yogurt were the only non-carb items). Numerous restaurants were within walking distance. No hot tub or pool, but there is a fitness room with bikes and a treadmill. I'd stay there again, especially at the $55 Saturday rate, if it's not summer (pool) and only if I'm guaranteed a room on a different floor!
