“Great Weekend”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

We have a 29 ft travel trailer, 10 and 8 year old, and we've recently added a dog! We enjoyed our weekend at Jellystone Park! We stayed in the area close to the pier b/c our kids are obsessed with crabbing (which we caught a bunch of keepers!). This part of the park is pretty sunny, but there are plenty of shady areas. I liked that we where able to easily walk everywhere in the park. My kids had a great time in the pool and splash zone--very clean, plenty of tables and chairs. A huge storm came in Saturday afternoon that dumped over an inch of rain in an hour so needless to say the campground was pretty soggy after that. Some campsites had tons of water--felt bad for those people. Not sure if this is a problem that can be fixed or if it's just part of being so close to sea level, so when making reservations you may want to ask about flooding in certain sites. Bathrooms were very clean and new, my only suggestion to the owners would be to put a bench/chair in each stall so people have a place to put their belongings, other than the floor, and a place to sit while getting dressed. The staff was helpful and courteous. For us, this park worked well. Be sure to check out the life size checkerboard in the Rec Center--it's pretty cool. We enjoyed it and would go back again!

Glad to hear your family enjoyed your recent stay with us. We are located on the Severn River which connects to the Chesapeake Bay. With all the rain we have had this season and because some of our property is so close to sea level the ground is just saturated.

Our bath house is new and we do our best to make sure it is always clean. We agree that benches are needed in the showers and intend to have benches next season.

We look forward to having you camp with us again!

We have stayed at 2 other Yogi's. Hagerstown, MD & Loray, VA. They were both great. As for this one if u like having no TV and a water mess when it rains, this is the place for u. The pool & water zone are so small compared to other Yogi's. It is super boring here unless u have a boat. Oh if u have kid that loves to fish or crab fish they would LOVE it here like our child did. As for this family we will for sure will NEVER be back.

This is our 3rd season as a Yogi and you have compared us to other Jellystone Parks which have been established for over 20 years. We agree with you that the Jellystone Park in Hagerstown, MD and in Luray, VA are both incredible camping resorts. Our campground is smaller and not as welldeveloped. Our Water Zone is amply sized for our park and will be expanded as needed. It was built in 2011 and has two slides, a spray park, kiddie pool and swimming pool and is enjoyed by most of our campers. It sounds like your children truly enjoyed the fishing and the crabbing which is a huge attraction at our park. We hope that you may reconsider and visit our park again in the future.

Sincerely,

We decided to try this campground because of its location. Wife had to work so she commuted for the couple of days we were there.
This Jellystone facility was an acquirement of a private campground, a couple of years ago. We have stayed at another Jellystone, and that one is like being at a pro level, and this one is just amateurish. That opinion is based on the following:
1. The organization of the lots is not what I have seen at other campgrounds. There are "year rounds" scattered wherever there are shady areas. The labeling of the lots was confusing, even to the guy that escorted us in. The row of lots we were in had multiple hookups. trying to jam them in if needed?
2. The pool/water park area is fairly small. It is fun and nice for the kids. And that is all that matters I guess, but I could not imagine what it would be like on a summer weekend.
3. They indicate a game room. My son and I found it. Basically a closet which had an air hockey table and 3 small "steal your money" things. That's it.
4. The snack bar place was a ripoff. The corndogs were actually cold in the middle. Fries were not that good either. I heard another parent say they should have gone out and bought a couple of gallons of ice cream for what they payed.
5. They hire teens which is normal, but the ones we came across were not engaging with the kids (or anybody other than co-workers). That was the problem with the guy running the snack bar.
6. All roads are gravel. Other Jellystones (and other campgrounds) have mainly paved roads.
7. There are no cable hookups. our antenna worked but had very few channels.
8. the "planned activities" are basically the same everyday. Boring for boys over age 7.

The good things were the bath houses/restrooms were clean and those buildings appear new. The guy that escorted us (and apparently has many jobs) was nice and he seemed to always be doing something. I think his name is Nick. There are 4 horse shoe pits, that was fun. Son had good time on bounce pillow and water slides..

I know that we will not return. We did want to try this out, and that's how it goes sometimes.

Room Tip: Most lots have shade. But anything around the pond and out toward the water are full sun. All lots a...

Thanks for your detailed review of our property. This is our 3rd season as a Yogi. We purchased a 40 year old campround and converted it to a Yogi . Campground Owners who built their campgrounds years ago did not anticipate the size and needs of camping units in the future. Over the years we have slowly been moving the seasonal campsites to one area, organizing and restructuring the campsites and hook ups. The pool and water zone was built in 2011. With the continued increase in campers we may grow out of it quickly. Video games are a thing of the past and have been replaced by all the electronic devices and cell phones in today's world. Video arcades are being replaced with other amenities at most campgrounds. A amount of our staff is local teenagers. They are an integral part of our team. For many it is their first job and they are learning valuable lessons and a strong work ethic. We hope they benefit from working for us. Our activity schedule gets better each year and there is less and less uniformity as we grow. Cable TV is an improvement we hope to have at the park sometime in the near future. Our snack bar is enjoyed by many and gets compliments all the time. However mistakes are made and occasionally an item will not be cooked correctly. Please always return cold food as it is gladly replaced to your satisfaction.

We are sorry to hear you shall not return again. Improvements are made at the park each year and campers notice and appreciate these improvement season to season. We are committed to making Gloucester Point one of the finest campgrounds in VA. We are confident that your camping visits would only get better each year you returned! Hope you will reconsider.

Sincerely,
Eileen & Ken Gedicke

Making reservations was relatively simple, my only complaint is the the $50 non refundable fee per camp site for booking in advance. So for all three camp sites it cost $150 of non refundable funds. Luckily we had a big enough group to split it up, but it still seemed unnecessary. The grounds are a little smaller than other yogi bear campgrounds I have been to but, on a much better note....

We traveled with a group of 15 people at the campground. We set up six tents and were spread out over 3 different tent sites. Tropical Storm Andrea rolled in the previous night and the night we arrived which made the camp sites very wet. We tried to choose the one with the least number of puddles and did our best. We brought tarps which helped to ensure our tents would not become wet on the bottom.

As far as the campground goes....the bathroom facilites were very close by, they were clean, and well maintained. Our group used the dock to go fishing, pool, slides, volleyball court, and blob - all of which were an absolute blast! We also bought fire wood which was delivered right to our campsite - super convenient.

They treated us with respect and our group was happy with how the weekend went. We were only 6 minutes away from food lion which was very convenient for food runs. We also went to Busch Gardens and some of the group went to Yorktown and Jamestown. The campsite was in a convenient location and we had a great time!

Thanks for sharing your experience with other Trip Advisor campers. It has been a very rainy season. It always amazes us how many folks like yourselves will tent camp during inclement weather. Yogi's Water Zone has 2 slides, a spray park, swimming pool and kiddie pool and is enjoyed by all. The fishing and crabbing is fantastic and it is all right here for campers to enjoy.

We hope to see you again!

This was my first yogi bear campground we stayed out. If I wasn't told by many people that this place was not the typical yogi campground I would never had tried another. I was so disappointed with the set up and the staff that I really couldn't believe that people keep going back to these campgrounds. The people who live at the sites were rude and very unfriendly. I say save your money and find a nicer campground. The place is also hard to find glad we had our GPS ! On the plus side the jumping pillow is fun for kids and adults but that's about it.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a GPS with you this campground can be a little tricky to find.

It is always disheartening when a camper is disappointed. This is our 3rd season as a Jellystone Park and each year going forward more improvements will be made. Approximately 25% of our sites are seasonal campsites. Our seasonal campers are very supportive, love the park and understand the park guidelines better than anyone. We have never had a problem with any seasonal camper being discourteous to a vacationing camper.

Our rural location makes it a bit difficult to find us. Unfortunately we are limited by the County and the State for the amount of directional signs allowed. Most GPS direct you correctly to our location.

The jumping pillow is alot of fun for both children and adults. Glad to hear you enjoyed this amenity. Hope you will give us the opportunity to serve you again!

We arrived 2 weeks before the season started for a 3 week stay at the campground. Unfortunately, there were several days of rain which resulted in our camper becoming lake front property and the parking area a sea of mud. For much of our stay, we could not park on our site because of the mud and ruts.

Bathrooms were fairly clean but the heat in the bath area was set at 58 degrees which made for very chilly showers. As the weather warms, this may be a satisfactory temperature, just not right now.

Several play areas are available for children and appeared to be well maintained. There is also a boat dock area that looks to be in good condition.

Overall, we felt more time needed to be spent preparing the actual sites for the season.

Thanks for your comments regarding your stay at our park. You camped with us two weeks prior to the opening of our season with alot of opening work still needing to be finished. In addition the tremendous amount of rain did flood certain areas and make it more difficult to prepare the campsites for opening. We encourage you to visit us during our official operating season and think you will find all of your concerns addressed.

Respectfully,

We just had the most fabulous time at the Hog Wild Weekend here at Jellystone! What a great RV and camping property on a wonderful location. We had no idea that this place was here, and we are so glad to have found it. This is one of those places that just screams with "pride of ownership." There were just so many little things that the staff did that let us know that they very much care to make this a great experience. I was very much impressed by even the younger staff members and the time and patience they took working with the young kids on the many arts and crafts and activities. Every time we saw a staff member they would make a point to ask if we were having fun and if everything was good. My 8-year-old niece loved the visits by Yogi and Boo Boo. We were not sure what to expect out of the costumed characters at an RV park, but these guys had costumes that looked new. We particularly like the "Hey" Ride - yelling "hey" to everyone was so much fun.

It was a cold weekend - no pool and no one was out in the paddleboats or kayaks - but we had plenty to do outdoors. Just walking around was great. The kids had a great time on the "jumping pillow." You do not need kids to enjoy this place, though. There was plenty of opportunity to relax and just hang out.

All of the sites are good as far as we could tell. Nice and level, picnic table, fire ring - what you would expect from a nice RV park. We were with a larger group, and everyone was happy with their site. We were in a site by the waterfront across from the dog park. It was perfect for April, but if we come back in summer, I would try to get a shaded site. The water table is high, so if it rains, there will be mud. It is not a swamp or anything, it is just sandy. The puddles dried up in a day even in the cooler weather. Not a problem for us in the RV since we just took off our shoes before going in. The tent camp sites were a bit higher up and had more grass, so they looked dry.

For DC/Northern Virginia folks - We took I-95 to Hwy 64 to Colonial Parkway early on Friday to get down. It was fine, and we were able to stop by the Flying J at exit 104 and get cheap gas. If you are heading back to the DC area on Sunday, take Hwy 17 up to Fredericksburg and get I-95 there. We are so happy we did, and we beat those that let an hour before us home.

Room Tip: We have a 34 foot motor coach and had no trouble getting around in the park. We have a wide variety...

I am so glad to hear you and your family enjoyed your stay at Jellystone Park at Gloucester Point. We strive to provide each and every guest with a rewarding family experience. I will pass on your kind words to our staff, and to Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, as well! It sure was chilly on Hog Wild Weekend, but as your family found out, there are many activities and amenities for people to enjoy. Thank you for your review, and for leaving the tip about coming down 17 from Washington, D.C. area. It is a beautiful and easy drive that keeps you off the interstate for most of your trip.
