“Beyond our expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2009

My wife and I have stayed at other B & B's, so we've been pampered before. You never know what to expect when you open the door. Well, our title says it all for the Bergey Cottage. From the rose petals on the bed to the fresh flower arrangement and the awesome chocolate covered strawberries, our 20th anniversary couldn't have been better. When you view pictures on a web site, you always think "is it really that nice"? The photos of your cottages do not really do them justice. Roomy, clean, all the comforts of home and a knock on the door each morning with a delicious breakfast basket waiting just outside the door for you, who could ask for anything more? Oh, and I almost forgot, the picnic basket for a romantic lunch on the day of our anniversary in the hills of the Shenandoah. Perfect!! Janice, Anna and Dennis thank you again for a wonderful four days away from the hustle and bustle of the Jersey life.

The cottage was lovely... neat and clean. The bed was amazingly comfortable. The water-jet tub was so relaxing and the candles made the experience spa-like.

It would have been nice if the toilet had a bit more privacy. Since the bathroom has no door and the wall is open at the top into the living/bedroom, there is no way to take care of "business" in private.

Also, we were also disappointed that we missed the special Mother's Day Breakfast. A note stated that breakfast would be delivered no later than 9:15 AM, but we left by 9:20 or so with no sign of the delivery. We received an email apology with the menu of what sounded like a delicious breakfast, but that sort of added insult to injury when we had to grab bagel from a fast food stop and eat in on the run. Our hosts felt that accommodating another guest made it OK to make our breakfast late. Breakfast at 9:15 is late for most people I know.

We were disappointed.

My husband and I loved this B&B. We had just gone through a rough miscarriage and decided to treat ourselves to a nice weekend away. Although we tend to enjoy being able to meet new people at the B&B's we stay at (eating together at the breakfast table) this time we needed something that didn't require the “meet and greet”. I looked at all the B&B's within an hour from our home and I was ecstatic when I found this one. We chose the Quill Cottage and it was even prettier than the pictures. We were able to relax on a little love seat and watch movies all day. We enjoyed chocolate covered strawberries. We had a romantic dip in the hot tub. It was awesome. Even when the innkeeper brings breakfast it is just a tap on the door...by the time you grab your breakfast basket they've disappeared.

As for the breakfast: Reading on this site I was under the impression that we wouldn't receive your typical B&B breakfast but a breakfast sandwich instead. We were ok with that but when our breakfast came we were surprised to see a delicious, hot, gourmet breakfast. Complete with fruit, juice and such. She (one of the innkeepers) includes a note explaining what you're having.

One more thing that I feel I must include is the committed and enthusiastic spirit of these innkeepers. Not only were they wanting to provide whatever they could to make this weekend special for us but the last morning we were there we got a note in our breakfast basket explaining that late the evening before her husband (the other innkeeper) had slipped on some ice and fallen off the patio. He broke his hip and shattered his elbow and was awaiting surgery. Because of this she informed us we wouldn't be able to meet during check out. I was moved by the fact that with all she went through the night before you would never have known because everything was still running smoothly. We even had an incredible breakfast!! This couple and their B&B were outstanding. I hope you find some time to visit it...you will most certainly enjoy yourself!

We had the most wonderful experience at this B&B. From their gourmet breakfasts served at the door to the feather bed to the romantic jaccuzi tub it just could not be beat. We stayed in one of the cottages separated form the main house and it was very cozy, private and romantic. It was the most wonderful way for us to start our lives together-- we were married that weekend in Harrisonburg! We loved everything about it and can't wait to go back to celebrate our anniversaries! We also loved the B&B cat, Dandy! The owners really went out of their way to see to it that we were happy during our stay! I would recommend this place to anyone who truly wants to get away and relax and reconnect with the one they love!

The breakfasts were excellent. Exactly what they say on the website. Elegant and delicious. The hosts were were friendly, hospitable, accomodating but they also made sure to give us all a lot of space and were never intrusive. The location isn't as tucked away as you might imagine. Itliterally is by the side of the road with residences located quite close by. Regardless, its still located in a pretty much rural area and if you took a short drive out you'd see nothing but beautiful farming lands. We went skiing at Massanutten which was fun and affordable as far as skiing goes. Overall well worth it and it was a great getaway from the city.

By the Side of the Road was wonderful, all amenities were outstanding, even Dandy the cat was wonderful! The accomodations, amenities and wonderful breakfast (the absolute best waffles I have ever eaten) were all outstanding! To top things off, we had a beautiful snowfall to awaken to on our day of departure! Thank you for everything that you done to make our stay a wonderful one! We hope to return in the very near future!

A wonderful retreat for our anniversary! Service was excellent and the room was amazing. We stayed in the Fitzgerald Cottage and it couldn't have been better. Downtown Harrisonburg is a wonderful little place to get food and relax.
