“Adequate overnight stopping point”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

As Hampton Inns go, this is one of the pricier locations we have stayed at and I guess I expected a bit more. Pros: Big room and big bathroom with a huge shower, clean carpet and bedding, free breakfast. A Cracker Barrel restaurant is located just behind the parking lot, within easy walking distance. At night, the hallway was quiet and no noise could be heard from adjoining rooms! Cons: Room 221 had a funky smell, not bad enough to request a room change, but something that made your nose flare each time you entered the room after being away. Friday morning the trash truck outside our room woke us at 7AM, which was when we needed to get up anyway but would be a problem if you were planning on sleeping in. The breakfast area is big and the food trays were in the process of being refilled when we arrived, but that's just bad luck on our part. No tub in this room if that matters to you.

Room Tip: 221 had a funky smell when we stayed there.

We stayed in Harrisonburg for 7 nights and stayed at the Hampton Inn South. There are both good and bad things to say about this hotel.

Pros:
Convenient location off the I81
Good soundproofing, so quiet rooms
Decent breakfast options
Tea and coffee available 24/7
Good size room

Cons:
Air con unit very loud in room
No bathtub, only a large shower cubicle
No HD TV channels at all
No privacy curtains behind main curtains
Poor front desk staff – see below
Poor housekeeping - see below

When we checked in it was a little after 3pm, so we were not surprised to hear our room wasn’t quite ready. However we were surprised when the two staff member then went into a full-scale debate about how to handle this. After listening to them for several minutes, we suggested we return in an hour. This did not seem to have occurred to them, but they agreed. When we returned our room was ready. I don’t have a problem that the room wasn’t ready, but do have issues of staff arguing in front of guests.

On our second day we returned to our room to find all our drawers where our clothes and personal possessions were, including bedside cabinets opened. This was a totally unacceptable invasion of our privacy. I complained to the front desk and was told it would be reported to the manager the next day.

The following day we returned and were asked if our drawers were ok this time. I said we had not yet been to our room. She told me to phone down if there was a problem. This time our drawers were closed.

The next day I asked what the explanation was for opening the drawers in the first place, but was told she had no idea. We never received and explanation or apology for this and no contact at all from the manager. A totally unacceptable thing to happen in the first instance but made worse by the hotel’s lack of response or recompense. One day we did not get our coffee making supplies replenished and another day we did not receive any housekeeping at all.

We would not stay here again.

I was extremely satisfied with the friendliness and courtesy of the hotel staff. The breakfast was well stocked, but would have loved chocolate milk for the kids. They won't drink the juice and don't like white milk.

This Hampton Inn has it all--great facilities and breakfast, very helpful staff and great rates! We often stay in Hampton Inns because they are consistently clean, have reasonable rates and great complimentary breakfasts, but this one was the best of all!

Let's face it. Mid-priced Hampton Inns in the $100-$150 per night price point should offer the same generic, commoditized lodging experience wherever you are.

I am happy to report that our family of two adults and two children had no problem whatsoever at this facility (it was our second stay). The room was fine, as was the lobby, breakfast and service. It was a standard, Hampton Inn stay.

No issues with noise; no issues with air conditioning (as plagued us at two other Hilton properties this summer).

Room Tip: Room 410 on most recent stay

All is excellent at this hotel: rooms are roomy, bathroom large and clean, linens clean, bed comfortable, internet and TV all worked well. The breakfast was good, as it is in all Hampton Inns. The breakfast staff is cheerful and accommodating. When the AC unit was running (and it turns off and on to maintain temperature), it was very loud and difficult to sleep soundly when on.

We arrived at the hotel an hour or two before the stated check-in time in hopes of finding our room ready. We had just spent four hours moving our teen into a dorm at JMU and we wanted to freshen up a bit before heading out for lunch. The friendly front desk clerk was able to switch our intended room with one that was available. We've stayed here twice before and prefer it over the Hampton Inn University because it is a nicer property and a straight shot into downtown for dining. Our room was very clean and the bathroom spotless. Comfy pillows, beds and cold air-conditioning and no noise from outside made for a good night’s sleep. We did not eat breakfast or use the pool or gym, but it was all described to us at check in. Our stay was free with HH points, but even if it weren't, it'd be worth the price paid. We will always use this as our Harrisonburg hotel option if available during our visits.
