“Good food. Sticky tablecloths”
I rate The Old Brogue average. The food is very good, but the place loses points because it is not clean and needs basic interior upkeep.
The Old Brogue served us two of the best Reuben sandwiches either of us has had in a long time. The sandwiches were made with delicious corned beef perfectly prepared. The food did not suffer from greasiness since the amount of cheese was just right. The toasted rye swirl bread stayed crispy because the amounts of sauerkraut and dressing were appropriate--not too much to soak the bread. My sandwich was accompanied by a flavorful cucumber, tomato and onion salad.
The tablecloths are a dark green vinyl. Ours was quite sticky on top. I felt a side of the tablecloth draped over the edge of the table and compared that to the tabletop surface. The top was definitely quite deeply sticky from not being properly cleaned for a long time. Also, the tablecloth on our table had smears of jam and pancake syrup in several places. Following a request from me, the waiter cleaned the tablecloth with Windex. That removed much of the food residue, but the surface remained sticky. I'm not convinced Windex is the right solution for cleaning food-service tables, especially when it is sprayed while customers' food is on the table.
The men's restroom was a bit dirty. More attention is needed to keeping that restroom clean throughout the day. The toilet particularly needed attention. Plus, dark dirty spots were around the doorknob on the inside--not sure what was caked on there. Do cleaners ever check the INSIDE of doors? The men's restroom also needs repair. The sink's drain pop-up was missing, the mirror has lost a significant amount of its silvering, the sink was not properly caulked, etc.
The ambiance of The Old Brogue is adequate, fair, okay or almost good. I am not sure how to describe the place to get my meaning across unambiguously. The restaurant tends toward shabbiness inside. A good cleaning and basic upkeep would go a long way to improving the atmosphere without altering the Irish pub ambiance.
