“Great Anniversary Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2014

My boyfriend and I went here for our two-year anniversary on a living social deal (so we got extra goodies--wine & chocolates, goodie bag, etc) and had a great time! It was secluded enough but also accessible to Lexington, Staunton, tons of hiking, and other activities. Patty and Dan were wonderful hosts--we got in at 11pm on Friday and they were up and ready to get us settled, they made great recommendations for places to go, and breakfast both mornings was delicious. We went to Rockbridge Winery, hiking in Douthat State Park, and to Lexington & Staunton for some meals and everything was lovely. I would definitely recommend the Hummingbird Inn!

My husband and I have stayed at several B&B's and have rented several beach homes over the years and the Hummingbird Inn is one of the most charming and immaculate places we have stayed. Their guest rooms are beautifully decorated, the rooms as well as the bathrooms are very clean!! The bed was extremely comfortable, so comfortable in fact, that my husband and I purchased the same sheets and comforter for our bed at home. Dan and Patty were extremely kind and make you feel right at home. We were there three days and every breakfast they served looked like something out of a magazine and was delicious!! My husband and I wanted to get away from the busy, hectic city life and the stress of our careers. The Hummingbird takes you back in time when life moved at a slower pace. The country setting is breathtakingly beautiful and the train passing by did not bother us at all. As a matter of fact, we welcomed the sound. It once again reminded us of the old charm that the Hummingbird offers where life is relaxed and peaceful. Goshen Pass is right up the road where we enjoyed the heavenly scenery as well as watching the kayakers. Can't forget to mention the swinging bridge that is nearby.....made me feel like a little girl again! Lexington is a charming old town about 25 minutes away where there are nice selections of restaurants and shopping. My husband and I love this town and it too takes you back in time where you can enjoy quaint boutiques, coffee shops and even a horse and carriage ride through town. Lexington is home to Washington & Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute. Whether it is relaxing on the charming grounds at the Hummingbird, taking a nap in your room, enjoying a garden tub-candle light bath, reading a book in the sunroom, sitting outside and watching the train go by or taking a nice romantic walk along the train tracks, sitting on the deck near the stream or looking for scenic enjoyment nearby, the Hummingbird is the place to visit!!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Alleghany Guest Room. This room was very spacious and had lots of windows that over...

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Hummingbird Inn. Our room was immaculate and very comfortable (with great sheets!). As others have noted, the owners are extremely helpful, informative, and accommodating. And, they provided such thoughtful gifts - everything we would need for a lovely happy hour on one of their porches! Breakfasts were delicious - and the hosts are anxious and prepared to meet dietary restrictions or preferences. We also enjoyed dinner at the Waterwheel Restaurant in Warm Springs and were delighted with a performance at the American Shakespeare Company in Staunton and with touring the Frontier Culture Museum. We had such a nice time that we are planning to return to the inn and explore the area some more.

Kudos to Patti and Dan for ensuring their guests have a wonderful experience.

The owners of the inn are really sweet and helpful. But with railroad tracks running right in front of the inn and trains passing at midnight, 2 am and 7 am each night, shaking the house and tooting loudly, this was not our idea of an idealic serene getaway.

We are sorry to hear that the trains bothered you and that the ear plugs provided didn't help to take the edge off for you.. Being in the country with a track in front of the house... the empty coal car trains do pass by randomly... sometimes multiple times, sometimes not at all... we wish we had a schedule or could do something about it - but we don't and we can't.... so sorry!

My husband and I had a wonderful time at this B&B. Two nights didn't seem long enough. Patti and Dan were such great host. We were the first guest to arrive so Dan gave us a tour of the house and all the bedrooms. They were very welcoming and encouraged their guest to spend time in all the public areas of the house. We stayed in the Eleanor room which had the most comfortable king bed. The room was on the front of the house so we did hear trains throughout the night but it didn't bother us... too much. We will definitely be back again.

My husband and I stay at B&B's very frequently and I have to say that Patty and Dan were by far the most gracious hosts we've ever encountered. They went above and beyond. Always asking if there was anything they could get us or do for us. We felt like we were staying at the Ritz. They were friendly and kind and their entire home is open to you for your comfort. There is a beautiful wrap around porch where you can enjoy a nice glass of wine and a good book. Breakfast both days was wonderful and oh..the scones were so yummy! I will tell you the home Inn is located next to a train track which goes by several times a night, which woke me up but I was always able to get back to sleep. Although this can be a little bothersome, it was also kinda cool at the same time. You will love staying here!

Room Tip: we stayed in the largest room with the Jacuzzi hot tub! Was an aweseome room.

We have just returned from a two night stay at the Hummingbird Inn, and we were very happy with our choice. Dan and Patty are very good hosts, and the inn was both lovely and spotless. We stayed in the Alleghany Room, which is on the second floor in the front of the home. The bed was very comfortable, and the bath had a whirlpool tub to help soak away sore hiking muscles. The public rooms of the Hummingbird are beautiful, and guests are encouraged to use them. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the trains, which do pass by the home ( the inn is named after a train, after all ). That said, we did not mind the trains, and would definitely recommend this inn.

Room Tip: Train buffs would prefer the two rooms in the front of the Inn.

Thank you for your kind words and for understanding about our trains.... liked that you commented on the fact that the Inn is named after the original passenger train that would stop in front of the house back in the late 1800's/ early 1900's... so much history here... so much country! We hope we'll see you again!
