This was our second stay at the Hummingbird, and we'll definitely be back. The rooms are well appointed, the breakfast s ate always delicious, and Dan and Patty are the most gracious of hosts, who are very knowledgeable ablit thr area and have quality recommendations for dining and activities in the area. A weekend stay is the perfect way to relax. We're looking forward to returning in the summer or fall so we can enjoy the great wrap around porch.

The Hummingbird Inn is nestled in a charming little town of Goshen, Virginia. As soon as you pull up to the Inn, you are immediately struck by its charm, and it gets even better as you enter. The Inn keepers couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming. The rooms are very cozy and clean. The beds are very comfortable, and give you a good nights sleep. The breakfasts are outstanding, tasty and filling; so good in fact, you would like to ask for seconds. The closest towns are Lexington and Staunton, VA. Both are charming and have a lot of history, and very good restaurants. In addition, there are some of the best wineries Virginia has to offer in a short driving distance from the Inn. All in all, our stay was wonderful and Susan and I look forward to returning. We will definitely recommend to our friends and co-workers.

Enjoyed the Hummingbird tremendously. We were looking for a get away from it all weekend, and that is what we had.

Ambience? The ambience was perfect to our taste - laid back, loaded with character, yet homey, well suited to the surroundings and to the era of the Roosevelts.. We had the Eleanor room - the room was enhanced by a gas fieplace, plus wing chairs, an era appropriate desk, and sitting table at which to enjoy a glass of wine - the wine glasses were already there waiting. Good that it is not overly "Victorian" like a painted dollhouse, not stuffy, not an overabundence of expensive antiques -

Train? Well yes I was worried about it, because I tend to be a light sleeper.. It did pass by 4 times the first night (!) and only once the second night. But although I heard it, (you get the warning whistle first), I fell immediately back to sleep.

Location? We first arrived at dusk, and thought - uh-oh this little street (not really a street, but a gravel road), looks unwelcoming and a bit shabby. Once inside we saw how lovingly the home was restored, and by day we realized we were in a perfectly beautiful scene.

It's a bit far from good restaurants - but we made the short trip to Lexington both nights - which was well worth the 20 minute ride. There is a also a more convenient every-day type restaurant right around the corner.

We took the opportunity to enjoy a fire in the chiminea by the creek; and were fortunate to catch one of those perfect Fall weekends, just 1 week prior to peak "leaf" season. Enjoyed the Roosevelt memorabilia scattered about, and the hosts have also provided plenty of touring information about the local vicinity.

Food - Again perfect for us - not over-the-top gourmet and rich, but still finer than one would cook for themselves at home......cornbread with bacon in it, omelets, cinnamon bread French toast - that kind of thing.
Anything I would change? Oh it's so picky I'm amost reluctant to mention it - but it was important to my husband - we both like (need!) our coffee quite a bit stronger than what was offered! Perhaps for other guests, it might have been just fine - but I really like that good cup of coffee in the morning.

I would love to go back next Fall - same weekend, and if possible, visit the Inn at other times of the year too.
Interesting note - there was one other guest there who had returned numerous times. Although we are somewhat local (Maryland) - there were two other couples who had traveled from Florida and other states - just to come here. Kind of tells you something.

The Hummingbird Inn is quite a gem. Located in the small, mountain town of Goshen, VA, you would never know it was there unless passing right by. This is a real place to escape the hustle & bustle of east coast, city life. Not a long drive from DC or surrounding areas... well worth the drive as the scenery and outdoor recreation in the area is first rate. Head out to the mountains for some hiking, biking, fishing, camping, you name it, it is available. The owners/hosts are as nice as can be and are always around to ensure you have a nice stay. Only draw back are the train tracks outside but this is not something I would be too concerned with... there are earplugs for sleeping and I found it kind of soothing to hear trains going by every once in a while... as I never hear them in the city due to the sirens and traffic. Overall, this B&B is worth it in costs and travel time. A perfect getaway for couples!
