“Wonderful stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2011

We used a Living Social promotion and couldn't have been happier. Lovely historic B&B with first class accommodations and breakfast. The owners are delightful and we appreciated the wine, cheese, cookies, soda, tea & coffee available. They were very informative about touring in the area. There's nothing to do in Goshen, but Staunton is a great town, and we enjoyed local wineries. Would love to go back to this charming inn!

the hummingbird inn is located is what appears to be an out of the way location, but for access to the natural beauty and outdoor attractions of Virginia as well as charming small towns and fantastic Virginia vineyards, the hummingbird is centrally located. the owners/ hosts, patty and dan, could not be more welcoming or be any better at what they do! this was my 5th visit! and I'll be back!

This 1853 house, added onto the original 1750 trading post, is one of the nicest B&Bs we've stayed in. The history of the house is fascinating, and Patty will happily share it with you. There are five good-sized guest rooms, all with en suite baths, plus a multitude of common areas with comfy seating both inside and outside. Hummingbird feeders--and hummingbirds, at least in late September--line the upper porch which wraps around the back of the house, overlooking a lovely yard that backs to a brook.
Previous reviews are detailed enough that I'll only add these comments:
1. Patty and Dan are two of the most delightful and gracious innkeepers we've had the pleasure to meet.
2. The Eleanor Room does has the smallest bathroom (we managed to peek in all the rooms), but the only king bed (the rest are queens). And hey!! Eleanor Roosevelt slept in it!
3. No TVs in rooms, but a TV and DVDs available in the den.
4. Breakfast is at a large communal table, at 9 a.m. (Some of us love meeting new people whatever the time, but I know not everyone is a morning person.) Coffee and tea available 24/7.
5. Goshen is definitely a quiet town. Plan on a 25-30 minute drive to find dinner in Lexington or Staunton.
6. Hope for a clear night, because the starry sky in Goshen provides a beautiful change from the suburbs.
7. Yes, there are usually 2 or 3 freight trains that come past on no set schedule during the night. They did wake us up (at least some of them), but didn't detract from our stay, and in fact, probably made it more memorable. And Patty has earplugs if you want them.

For the past 19 years we have sped past Goshen, Virginia on our way to nearby Warm Springs. Recently we finally stopped in Goshen and, as part of a LivingSocial package, we spent two very pleasant days at the Hummingbird Inn. The owners, Patty and Dan Harrison have achieved a perfect balance between professionalism and friendliness which was evident not only while we were at the Inn, but also in the email we originally received to confirm our reservation and in the follow-up email we received a week before our arrival. We initially arrived before check in time so we could go do some hiking; Dan showed us where to stow our bags, which were then waiting for us in our room when we returned. Upon our return, Patty gave us a full tour of the house, ending with our room where she explained the features of the room and walked us through the contents of our well organized Living Social package. Just so you don't forget what room you are in, they put a card with your names just outside the room door.

The Inn is a beautiful old house with a large living room, a comfortable family room, a sun room and a large dining room. The family room has a refrigerator with bottled water and soft drinks and a computer if you didn't bring your own and need to go online (the whole house has excellent WiFi). In the dining room coffee and tea are always available, and in the afternoon delicious cookies appear. Because of the weather we didn't spend too much time sitting outside, but there is also a huge porch on the second floor and over by the barn there is a deck with a fire pit.

We stayed in the Eleanor Guest Room where Eleanor Roosevelt stayed in 1935. The room was large and comfortable and contained many amenities such as an electric fireplace (very nice on a chilly morning) and an internet radio/iPod dock. The bathroom was small, but modern and well equipped and included a two headed shower. My wife said she had two of her best night's sleep while we were at Hummingbird, but the bed was a bit soft for me; I prefer a firmer mattress (Patty mentioned that the other rooms did have firmer mattresses).

Breakfast each day was a treat. If you arrived a bit early there were always some yummy baked goods waiting. The breakfast was tasty and filling; but not overwhelmingly so, as in many other B&Bs, but enough that we were able to skip lunch one day (though we did have an afternoon gelato).

One thing you do need to be aware of is that the Inn is right next to the railroad tracks and freight trains do come by at odd times. We know that trains came through both nights we were there, but we hardly noticed them and they really did not adversely affect our sleep.

Oh, and finally, yes I did see some hummingbirds.

Room Tip: If you like a firm mattress, stay in a room other than Eleanor.

The Hummingbird Inn is a gem situated in a rural, once prosperous village. Located a short ride to areas that combine history, (gorgeous) scenery (mountains and lush rolling hills), wineries, museums and colleges, hot springs, farms, excellent food (multiple farm-to-table and organic options), exploring and hiking plus the home is inviting and interesting (with lots of hummingbirds, butterflies and bees keeping the flowers healthy) . The owners ovbiously care a lot about their guests and it shows in all of the nice touches throughout the house. My husband and I have been to numerous B&Bs but we felt the breakfast was THE BEST of any at the Hummingbird, not only was it artistically presented but it was also delicious, a wonderful (and healthy) way to start the day. I regret that we did not have more time to thoroughly enjoy everything that the western part of VA has to offer.

My wife and I visited the Hummingbird Inn as part of a package deal. We were able to use it during Labor Day weekend and jumped at the chance.

We've stayed at several B&Bs in the Shenandoah area over the past couple of years but the Hummingbird was definitely the best we've seen so far. The owners Patty and Dan were like everyone's parents and were great company. The inn itself was large and accommodating and they provided plenty of amenities (such as a large selection of games, movies, and books in the den, or free snacks and sodas) that made the stay all the more enjoyable.

The room we had (Teter-Wood, on the first floor) was equally fantastic, with its own first floor porch. The bed was very comfortable and I had absolutely no trouble sleeping in it. We also purchased a picnic lunch from the Inn to take with us for a day out and about. It was very tasty and reasonably priced.

The one caveat I would note for this place, which isn't under their control, is that the inn is right next to railroad tracks. Passing freight trains did have a habit of waking us up at night, although we got much better at sleeping through it by the second night.

If we were in the area again we'd stay here in a heartbeat. Highly recommended!

Patty and Dan are the ultimate hostess and host .... their home is YOUR home. Absolutely beautiful rooms; old, historic house in great shape with modern conveniences in each room. The grounds are quiet and beautiful. And we quickly realized the reason it's called the Hummingbird Inn -- fascinating all the hummingbirds! We took a beautiful drive into Lexington via Goshen Pass and spent a lot of time at the Inn, having cocktails on the lovely sun porch or morning coffee on the huge deck. or next to the babbling brook at the back of the property. We will definitely go back!

Room Tip: the Franklin room was awesome!
