My usual Premier Inn was full and despite, previously, being put off by the negative reviews for the Green Man I chose to give them a go. I was glad I did. Yes, they might want to think about refiting the rooms in a couple of years but, you know what, it all kind-off works. They have a water fountain in the courtyard that was relaxing to listen to (switched off at night) and the rooms were clean and comfortable. I had a room on the sunny (carpark) side of the hotel that caught the afternoon sun and overlooked fields. If you do not want to be disturbed by departing restaurant guests then I recommend the other side of the hotel (it did not disturb me for long).
I normally despair when I see a laminated menu with twenty or more main dishes because I would prefer a simple menu that does each item really well. I bet the chef would too because I got the impression he is a very good one. My Morrocan lamb was tasty, enjoyable and authentic enough though whose idea was it to add coleslaw? The Tempura prawns were to die for. A pleasant surprise was the genuinely homemade deserts.
The restarant is very popular with local people and everyone I spoke to had thoroughly enjoyed their meal and the atmosphere was filled by local people clearly enjoying their evening out (and I mean that in a good way).
However, the decor and table dressings are begining to look a bit dated and they might want to think about giving it a more contemporary feel in the future.
I went for a tempting 'Full English' option at breakfast and the kitchen staff and restaurant staff confirmed that they are truly professional and deliver a very high standard of service. My one comment would be that if I was staying on business more than one night I would be looking for enticing healthy options for breakfast (fruit salad, granola, yoghurts, patisseries etc) that did not seem to be evident.
All in all, do not be put off by the less positive niggles. They are just that because I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in the hotel. If you want the sterile, predictability and consistent standard of a chain, corporate budget hotel this hotel is not for you. If you want a family run hotel that is aimed at giving great service to families that like to keep an eye on the budget, a hotel with heart and soul, then give them a go. They deserve it.
