For years, my husband and I have lived just down the road from the Inn at Warner Hall. I've run the farm roads around it when training for a race. I've attended teas and receptions, and historical re-enactments. And I've taken every chance I have to eat at one of the five-course Friday and Saturday evening dinners prepared to perfection by Chef Eric Garcia.
But we've never stayed overnight. Never slept in a bed. Never enjoyed the breakfast Innkeeper Theresa Stavens has become known for (have you ever seen her sculpted star fruit plate??).
When the opportunity came up for my husband and I to stay one evening (a rare occasion having a toddler at home who we hate to leave), we jumped at it.
In summary, even though we've spent years on the historic property, we felt like we were worlds away. Relaxing on the pier near the boathouse gave us quiet time to talk and catch up from our family's busy life. A game of chess in the gardens sparked a little challenge and trash talk!
We walked through the dozens of acres of property...holding hands. Watched a thunder storm roll through from the safety of the second floor balcony, all while enjoying a lovely glass of wine and a favorite beer.
When dinner rolled around, and we received the gourmet supper basket for two, we ate and talked and talked and talked. There was so much food, and so much great time to just be together, we even took dessert up to our room to enjoy.
Despite having read up about the Ghosts of Tidewater, which features Warner Hall, I slept harder and more comfortably than I had in months. That's with the added pressure of not being with the son we love so much!
The next morning, the roads I've run preparing for a race became our early morning route, which helped burn up some calories before indulging in Innkeeper Theresa Stavens' famous breakfast.
In a few words, it was romantic. It was welcoming. It was exactly what we needed.
We felt like we were worlds away, even if for one night, in our own town.
