We pulled in to this hilltop inn at the end of a day of motorcycling on the Blue Ridge Pkwy/Skyline Drive and had no trouble navigating the steep driveway. Once at that top we had a temporary qualm about the somewhat unkempt outside appearance but once inside, all memory of those concerns immediately faded. The eclectic decorations were fascinating, especially the collection of quilts, but the coup de grace was the hospitable bar with beer on tap and wine of many varieties, complimentary for guests!

Hosts Bob & Joanie are a trip - really nice people who are genuine, cool, friendly, and just super all around innkeepers. Their daughter in law Sarah actually greeted us upon arrival and made us feel instantly welcome. We eventually met the rest of the clan including 18 mos old Mary Sophia (adorable) and Otis, a very big and exceedingly friendly Mastiff that Sarah and Greg rescued in Japan.

Comfy rooms, great amenities (including cookies in room, bath salts, talc powder, robes!), and wonderful breakfast.

Location is lovely - on a hill, with porch and rockers to watch the mountains in the distance, a short walk to town and dinner spots.

Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend this spot to travelers who like comfort and high hospitality with wonderful innnkeepers. Definitely our lodging highlight from 8 days on the road.

"We stayed overnight in their Julia Room which was a good-sized suite with a small living room and a king-sized bed. When we arrived Joan the owner had stepped out but the guests warmly welcomed us. I gather they were regular patrons of this place. They showed us to our room and invited us to join them in the bar.

The place itself is a more traditional looking b&b with the busy floral wallpaper and knick-knacks and books all over the place. My husband later went downstairs to find the owner and chatted with them for a bit. Overall a very friendly, hospitable place. We had breakfast the next morning which was the best we'd ever had at a b&b. There was a small buffet of hot and cold cereals. We also had fresh-cut fruit and a warm sticky pecan bun waiting for us at the table. Then we ordered a veggie omelette which was pretty yummy. The owner's daughter explained that Joan had planned to stuff us before we leave and she was right!"

To keep this review short, I'll just say that this B&B was great. The breakfast was delicious, - we had their sunday special, cheese biscuits and sausage gravy. Joan and Bob are very welcoming and sincerely invite you into their home. Everything about it was great.

Coming from the UK we have just completed a three week tour of the USA and we had the good fortune to stay at the Woodward House at Front Royal. The rooms all follow different themes and are well appointed comfortable and clean, but what makes the difference is the hospitality, its just like coming home. I will long remember sitting on the front porch overlooking the town with a cold beer from the complimentary bar. But the highlight of our stay were the breakfasts, Joan's blueberry pancakes are out of this world and Bob's entertainment at table service is something to look forward to. Nothing was too much trouble for Bob and Joan from their help with finding restaurants to their guidance in attempting a day trip into Washington. we would certainly recommend the Woodward House.

My husband and I wanted to take a mini-honeymoon after our wedding last summer and managed to get away to Front Royal for a long weekend. We chose the Woodward House and were not disappointed (this was our first B&B experience). The accomodations were excellent: comfortable bed, cable tv, homemade cookies waiting in our room. The couple that ran the B&B were full of helpful information and truly made us feel comfortable. We LOVED the breakfast. The husband was a humorous and attentive waiter while his wife prepared the excellent food. They gave us directions to a nearby vineyard and answered all of our questions. The B&B was very close to the entrance to Shenandoah National Park where we encounted a black bear lumbering across the road! It was a memorable trip. We will definitely be going back!
