“Silent night, fantastic dark skies for stargazing, will be back soon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

Silent, remote location. Little sounds, a few cars, mooing. After dark, with clear skies, the view is fantastic. No Wifi though (and my cell didn't work), so print your Heavens-Above satellite schedules and starcharts the day before! The caboose was tiny but perfect. We brought some dinner to zap and cold stuff for the little fridge. Didn't use the hot tub, not our thing. Spent the evening on the little deck, enjoying the quiet. Pre-dawn there was a deer outside. Donny is a charming character and we talked with him a long long time.

The cabooses are not close to anything so pack like you're going camping because you won't want to leave once you're there. We popped out to see the Mabry Mill off-season -- gorgeous and the restaurant was inexpensive and cheery. We ate very very very well.

Cabooses and Donny exceeded my expectations and I will definitely plan another trip to get there again this year.

I wish there was more quirky lodging like this. I have no interest in lavish B&B rooms containing loads of cushions, frilly stuff, ceramic bunnies, and the like. Some of us nerds don't find that romantic, just sexist cutesy. So the no-frilly and functional caboose hit the spot for me.

We stayed here while touring the Blue Ridge Parkway to get out of the rain. This was a very unique experience. The owner of the establishment, named Donny is very nice and helpful!

The rooms:
The rooms are actually the cabooses. It is amazing how much they can fit in those little guys. Ours had a large bed, a hot tub(which we didn't use), satellite TV, a refrigerator, a toaster oven, and a full bathroom with a shower stall. It was obvious the owner took great car to make sure the rooms were very clean. The sheets were clean, the floor had been vacuumed, and the bathroom was clean.

The Location:
Excellent. Nestled back behind the trees in this big pasture. There is a great view, and it is very quit. At night, the trees were lit up with hundreds of fire flies.

The front porch:
Attached to each Caboose is a wooden deck with two rocking chairs. If the weather was nicer, it would have been nice to sit out there and take in nature.

A grill:
Each caboose has a camp ground style grill for charcoal cooking outside

Where to go eat:
We went to Mount Airy, NC to eat. It is your nearest option when staying here. There are lots of placed to eat in Mount Airy, but it is a big bustling city. Mount Airy is the birth place of Andy Griffith, but despite what the Blue Ridge Parkway guide says, I would skip it for anything other than going out to dinner.

Suggestions:
I can appreciate the expense it must have taken to bring three cabooses onto the property, lay down track, and furnish them.

However, if I may I have 4 suggestions to enhance the experience.

1. Rip out the carpeting and either put hardwood flooring down, or wood laminate

2. Remove any particle board in favor of replacement with real wood. For example the TV stand, and side tables.

3. Take out the hot tub and make an area with a table low enough to write on, or put a laptop computer on.

4. An optional ad on would be to add Wi-Fi to each caboose although I can appreciate the cost that would add.

The price: I would say right on the money for the amenities these cabooses offer. I would say with the above add ons I would pay 150.00 to 200. per night.

Overall, a great experience!

This was a stop on our annual trip north from Florida to Mass. The grassy creek cabooses are a must stay. We spent one night and wanted to stay longer. We rented 2 cabooses and the depot. The cabooses and the depot are well appointed, clean and comfortable. Each one has a Jacuzzi tub, microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker. One of the cabooses has a stove as well. Each caboose also has a deck with two rocking chairs. We sat outside enjoying the beautiful scenery and were treated to a beautiful sunset. After dark it is so peaceful with the beautiful noises of the crickets and little critters in the woods. So peaceful! Donnie, the owner, is great too. Super friendly and very conscientious. Can't wait to go back. Loved it!

My wife and I have been visiting this beautiful property for years, and continue to be totally satisfied on every occasion. On our first visit, there were 3 cabooses, and we were amazed at the creative use of the space. Who would have expected a Jacuzzi and kitchen in a caboose? This year, we were treated to a stay in the old depot on site. The owner is 100% committed to making visitors feel at home, and trust me, he has succeeded. A bit off of the beaten path, and the Blue Ridge Parkway, which minimizes traffic flying by. Our small puppy was welcomed. so we were all happy campers. If you have the opportunity, stay with these fine folks, grab it.

Room Tip: All of the cabooses are great, but if available, stay in the depot.

The wife, I and our dog Toby really enjoyed our stay at The Cabooses. We were going to the beach in NC and needed to stop along the way. We really enjoy the Blueridge Parkway Area so we picked this area. We had thought about finding a log cabin....but in looking we came across Donnies place. The photos looked great so we figured what the heck.....WE SURE ARE GLAD WE DID...... Donnie you have a fantasic resort. Cant wait to stop in again. Thanks The Bishops

Room Tip: all the cabooses are Fantastic....

This is a group of four old cabooses way out in the country that have all been refurbished into very nice accommodations. They all have jacuzzis, and a small kitchenette. We stayed here in 2009 while travelling down the Blue Ridge Parkway, and again this year in Sept. Very close to the Blue Ridge Music Center and to the town of Galax.

Wy wife and I found our stay at Grassy Creek Cabooses to be the highlight of our weekend get-a-way. Perched on a hill with terrific views are 3 refurbished cabooses and a depot building. Our Caboose #42, which had a cupola on top, was comfortably furnished with a small kitchenette, cable TV, sofa, bed, jacuzzi, and bathroom. The place was totally charming and quiet. We brought a picnic dinner and were glad that we did; that gave us more time to enjoy the comfortable deck chairs and watch the clouds rolling over the hill tops.
