“Best Tex Mex restaurant in No. VA”
My husband & I love good Tex-Mex food and we eat it out at least 1-2 times monthly. We liked a place near Reston VA but it was a good hike, especially on a weeknight or if already really hungry and want to go somewhere spontaneously (quickly). So, I started doing some local research (and found that El Tio was listed on TripAdvisor for Gainesville, VA and had very good ratings),,,and found El Tio was in Arlington, VA too...so told my husband, 'Let's try this!' That was a month ago and e have been there 4 times, so far. He loves burritos and deems their shredded beef one the best he has ever had. I love all sorts of things and tried a combo meal, two variants of fajitas and then, last week, had the Bistic Con Camerones (outside grilled skirt steak & shrimp) - which is now one of my most favorite meals EVER. It was a nice sized portion of steak, grilled to perfection (medium), topped by two med-lg shrimp and all of that doused in an extremely flavorful garlic sauce w/lots of sliced scallions. It comes w/white rice, black beans, and a small salad. I asked for and was permitted a samll order of three bites of plaintain instead of the white rice. I devoured that dish...and cannot wait to go again to get it!
When you are seated, a nice server appears immediately with homemade salsa and freshly-fried tortillas...excellent. We tried te queso this last trip, too, and it is perfect...elevated by the inclusion of diced white onion...just a good basic melted cheese sauce & onions...comoplements the salsa & chips very well. We also split a serving of flan and theirs is the best one out yet for us, too. I love flan, custards, etc. and theirs has a deep dulce flavor. It is served with a dollop of whipped cream and a marischino cherry. I had the sangria and it is perfectly classic and full of fruit...service is excellent, it is clean, it is in a shopping center - parking sometimes tight but always available, so far.
See that someone said in a previous rating that the food was greasy....NO! It as the 'normal' amount of oil that Mexican-based food should and does have but not excessively at all.
We are so happy to have found a local Tex-Mex restaurant that we can trust to be spot-on ~
