A friend gave my husband a gift certificate to Caraquena. We didn't know anything about the restaurant before showing up. We learned one valuable piece of information - if it is a Saturday night make a reservation. Within 15 minutes of arriving and being seated, the place was full. It is easy to make a reservation through Open Table. You can access this on the front page of the restaurant's website.
This is a no-frills, Latin American (but not Mexican) diner. Expect a diner atmosphere - bright yellow walls, green booths and striped table cloths. This is no greasy spoon diner, however. We ordered Yuca Frita to share as an appetizer plus Pabellon Criollo (pulled beef, black beans, rice, and plantains) and Corn Salad (9oz steak served on a corn salad) as entrees. I had a glass of wine as well. The food was very tasty! The pulled beef melted in my mouth. The Yuca Frita appetizer and accompanying sauces were delicious as well.
The wait staff was friendly and attentive despite it being busy. Our bill came out to about $50.00 (before tip) for an appetizer, two entrees, and a glass of wine. The atmosphere didn't mesh with the price or quality of food (both were high). Nevertheless, we had a great meal. We'd go back for lunch to enjoy the food again when the prices are likely to be more in line with a diner.
