“Plenty of other places to stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2006

Stayed 7/26 - 7/29 2006 on corporate travel. Everything from the start was wrong. Asked for non-smoking, dbl bed room. Got a king smoking room next to the laundry closet (loud). Asked to change, but was told hotel full. Asked for the fold-out couch to be made up, and had to call twice and waited 45 minutes for it to made up. Next morning ordered a full breakfast at 6am, delivered at 7:30am and what was delivered was cereal, so didn't eat it and was almost late for my business meeting. Was told by one staff member that he was glad it was his day off the next day because a new manager was coming in. I explained all this at checkout, but the lobby staff was very stoney faced (must get a lot of these comments)

Bottom-line: Had it been on my dime, I would have checked-out and gone somewhere else. There are plenty of other hotels in the area a lot cheaper. Try Extended Stay in the Mall, Candlewood Suites, Courtyard by Marriot (although I'm not inclined to stay at a Marriot again)

Oh yeah...was told by a local that this used to be a Holiday Inn...it shows, so don't expect more than that

“A Pleasant Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2006

We enjoyed a recent stay at the Fairfax Marriott Fair Oaks. Everything seems brand new and fairly high end. Beds were extremely comfortable, the bathroom a little small, but very nice. The hotel is located very close to the huge Fair Oaks Mall, just a short walk for shopping or dining.
The only problem was that our room faced the courtyard of the hotel, so there was no natural light coming into the room. It can also get noisy because of the many functions held in the courtyard and function rooms surrounding it. I would recommend requesting a room facing the outside.

“Marriott could do better!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2006

As other reviewers say, this was a Holiday Inn hotel which has been renovated to a Marriott. The public areas have been done well and look good and stylish but not all fixtures and fittings have been replaced in the rooms. The beds and bedding are all new and the rooms have been decorated as have the bathrooms but many of the fittings are those from Holiday Inn. The washbasin and bath in our room had been rplaced as had the tiling, but the toilet was old ond broken! The carpet stained and not too clean.

Some of the staff must also be from Holiday Inn, most of the front desk staff have no idea and are hopeless with customer service. On checking in we were assigned an incorrect room, although it was 5pm and an alternate room was available, they could not issue keys for 30 minutes and had us wait in the lobby!!! Why? no idea, no excuse and only a vague apology!!

The restaurant is good, the food excellent although very quiet as there are good restaurants in the area, the breakfast buffet is again not of Marriott standards.

There has obviously been a lot of money spent on this hotel especially in the public areas but Marriott, you really should do better when you take over a hotel from another chain, I always stay in Marriott's if I can but I would avoid this one!

“New Marriott -- no surprises”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2006

This hotel used to be a Holiday Inn of the "Holidome" variety but it has been remodeled bottom to top front to back and in its new life, the building carries the Marriott flag. As one other reviewer noticed, the only hints that it's not a 100% new building from the ground up are the elevators and the antiquated looking controls for the Heat and A/C. The owners have put a lot of money into marble and wood trim and crown moldings and it all looks very nice. The room had Marriott's new bedding with lots of pillows and was very comfortable. There was also a coffee table and sofa in the room. The desk was in two parts that allows you to move part to where ever in the room you want. This does allow you to work at the desk and watch the TV (in an armoire) at the same time. A definite plus in my book. The bathroom was on the small size but adaquate for one person. The other's are correct in that the rooms on the highway side of the building do have a fair amount of street noise especially during rush hours. See if you can avoid getting one of those.

The restaurant and bar are on the dark side with lots of wood panels with a very old gentleman's club vibe to it. While there were many people coming and going through the lobby of the hotel, the bar and the restaurant seemed to have very few customers. I wondered if the lighting had something to do with it.

My stay was very predictable Marriott -- nothing bad, but nothing extraordinary either.

“Marriott does a Good Job with Rennovation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2006

This hotel which used to be a Holiday Inn is now a Marriott hotel. I stayed there this past Easter weekend with a family member and we had a really enjoyable stay. Marriott did a really good with the rennovation. The hotel almost appears to be brand new but there are a few signs that it was an older hotel remodeled. For example the hotel elevators and in-room thermostats are visibly older but are fully functional. The hotel is in a good location next to the Fair Oaks Mall and is right off Interstate 66. The staff at the hotel was really friendly and outgoing. Our hotel room was a nice size and the beds were plush and very comfortable. The bathroom was a little small but did have nice features such as a granite counter top and a modern shower with a curved curtain rod and shower massager. Our room which was on the outer side of the hotel had a view of the parking lot and highway and at times I could hear some traffic but it wasn't too bothersome. If you prefer a quieter room you may want to request an inner room...some of which have a small balcony with a view of a fountain located in the main lobby. The hotel also has a large indoor pool and spa with a lifeguard on duty in addition to a fitness center and a concierge's lounge on the 6th floor. High Speed Wireless internet is also available in the rooms at a fee of $9.95 a day.
