Pan Am has been in this Fairfax shopping plaza for a long time and with good reason. This unpretentious spot serves good food at reasonable prices. Wait staff and kitchen staff have also been here a long time and service is always pleasant and prompt. It's probably not entirely fair to judge restaurants by how they handle poached eggs -- but there it is. I like poached eggs for breakfast and all too often they arrive still jiggling, thus slightly undercooked, in a little dish that's about 1/3 full of water. Pan Am's poached eggs arrive on the main plate, sculpted little pillows of eggy goodness that resemble freshly whipped meringue! They are firm and dry on the outside, yellow and soft on the inside. Potatoes are hearty, mixed with chopped onion -- sometimes you get more potatoes than you might want to consume! Coffee here is always fresh and hot thanks to staffers who are confessed coffee addicts who appreciate the wonder that is a hot, freshly brewed cup of coffee. A full service spot, Pan Am also serves lunch and dinner.I've had lunch here and have not been disappointed. It's the sort of place you go to meet friends. Regulars know the staff and vice/versa and there is a sense of home here. The decor channels Greek diner right down to the glass display case of towering cakes and pies and probably has not changed much since the restaurant opened. It's clean and comfortable. When you are in the mood for comfort food, I thnk Pan Am certainly delivers.
