We stayed in the Country Manor Room and loved it! My fiance brought me here as a nice weekend getaway before our upcoming September wedding. I am a UVA grad '99 and he went to Vtech - it was nice to come back to the area and also expose my hokie future husband to the beautiful area. Neither of us have ever stayed in a Bed and Breakfast so we weren't sure what to expect. We loved it! We only wished that we had booked for a longer period of time.
The Country Manor Room is a beautiful, comfortable, quiet room. It is the only room on the main floor - so while we didn't have the view of the mountains that the upstairs rooms did, having the privacy was well worth it. When we were waking up for breakfast, it wasn't until we opened our door that we could hear the other guests in the dining area - that's how quiet the room is! The bathroom is huge with a whirlpool tub, his/her sink, slippers and robes. The giant king size bed is so comfortable it was hard to get out of bed. There is a small couch and rocking chair - it was interesting to sit there and read all the journal entries of previous guests of this room! I did not read one bad comment.
Hayden and Dick are sweet, friendly hosts and great cooks! Make sure you get to breakfast right away so you don't miss out on the yummy food. Dick has plenty of interesting stories to share with you during breakfast!
The rest of the house is gorgeous. We went out on the balcony and wish we had gone at night because I'm sure the stars would have been beautiful. There is a TV room but we never sat there - part of the beauty of the place is it allows you to get away from all the craziness and enjoy peace and quiet. Our cell phones did not work there so again it was nice to have the quiet. One thing I noticed is how good everything smells...and it all seems natural - I didn't see one Glade plug-in once!
As for UVA and the rest of Charlottesville - as an alumni I highly recommend you go. Check out the Lawn at UVA, look around The Rotunda and shop/eat on the Corner as long as you are college-kids friendly. Check out Jefferson's home Monticello if you have time. Walk/eat/shop at the Downtown Mall, a street closed off for pedestrians only.
Make sure you don't visit Charlottesville during the Foxfield races (unless you really want to go to the races or you are fine being around a bunch of drunk college kids) or graduation weekend. We went there May 5-7 and it was perfect timing, perfect weather. I hear the Fall is even more beautiful.
Places to eat: Boars Head Inn has a great sunday brunch or nice fancy dinner. You MUST have a Bagel at Bodo's Bagels on The Corner (UVA) or right off 29. I personally love the pizza at College Inn at The Corner. Some say you can't go to UVA and not have a famous Gus burger (big burger with fried egg) at the Hot Spot on The Corner.
Feel free to email me with any questions! We will definitely go back and hopefully sooner than later and for a longer time period.
