“Not what I expected...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

I reviewed the local hotels in Covington before deciding on this Quality Inn. We were looking for a safe, comfortable hotel for a family occasion in a nearby town. This hotel looked to be marginally better than the alternatives. Plus I thought it would be quaint to be downtown.

First, I concur with the pretty much unanimous opinion that whatever is happening in Covington is not happening in the nearby downtown area. We stayed on a Saturday night and it was dead. DEAD in caps. We arrived at 600PM and I don't think there was anything open within walking distance. Consider one of the alternatives nearer I-64 if you are looking for the usual selection of nearby restaurants, big box stores, etc.

The facility is shoe-horned into a too-small plot, with a curiously out-of-place stone facia. The immediate impression of the facilty is overall clean, but worn. We found an old, empty can of Skoal behind the main door of the bedroom. Otherwise, the room was OK. Flat screen TV worked fine. So did the HVAC. Very nice and comfortable King size bed. Plenty of pillows! Clean bathroom.

The parking lot is a mess. And poorly lined for spaces! This was probably my biggest issue with the facility. The building is configured in a U-shape opening on the Main Street, with a covered entranceway/portico to the lobby on one of the interior wings. The driveway is also U-shaped, with parking spaces angled off both sides. The problem is the way people park two deap in the center, potentially blocking the flow of traffic. We have a mid-size SUV and it was difficult to make the turn and squeeze it around the circle. Best bet is to park across the street next to the Bank in the annex parking lot - poorly lit, but not crowded.

My advice is this - if you are passing through the region, plan to stay at either Lexington or Lewisburg. Both have a good selection of hotels, restaurants and shops immediately off I-64. If you need to stay in the Clifton Forge or Covington area, read the reviews and make your best decision based on priorities. My guess is your favorite guest rewards/loyalty program will make the decision for you.

Very basic aging facility with all exterior rooms. No restaurant on-site and nothing open nearby that we could find on Saturday evening. Oh yes, I forgot to mention the nearby paper plant. I am sure the locals would tell you it is the smell of money, but that conforting thought was of little help to my over-saturated olfactory senses on Sunday morning. Set your expectations accordingly.

There is always camping!

Room Tip: Toss of a coin. Maybe 2nd floor over the lobby? There is a patio above the portico. Otherwise they a...

We stopped in Covington on our way from Cleveland, OH to Lynchburg, VA and it was a great place to spend the night. Although the room was small, it was just what we needed. The price for the room (including a King bed) ended up being cheaper than we expected. It was very clean and in a great location. I would definitely stay here again!

Located on Main Street, this should be a good location. But the town is dead. Two cars on Main Street constitutes rush hour. The motel itself is recently renovated and the rooms are neat and clean, and the bed is good. Usual amenities plus a small refrigerator. The rooms are small, but that's no big deal. The corridors and parking lot looked like they haven't been swept in weeks; cigarettte butts everywhere. Staff is pleasant and they try to be helpful. Only real problem was the breakfast. Usual stuff, plus bacon and eggs. Eggs were the frozen, microwaved patties. Cold and swimming in some kind of oil. Inedible. Bacon was uniform, crisp and tasteless. Reconstituted bacon? Definitely not pet friendly, but smoking rooms are available for you sinners (grin).

This will sound harshe, but let's not mince words. There's nothing going on in Covington, and what is going on is going on closer to the interstate. The downtown is drying up, and looks it, but this hotel is a very pleasant surprise. It's in better shape than many rural Virginia Quality Inns, recently updated, with a lot less of the typical dank room smell that's usual for these old, converted motels. The staff was professional and knowledgable, and the room was clean and comfortable, though small. The price was right, and the nearby mountains are gorgeous, so this would make a decent base camp for exploring the area.

This Quality Inn was recently remodeled with modern furniture, new beds, etc. This is the only hotel in downtown Covington and is located very close to the MeadWestvaco paper mill. I think a lot of contractors that work at the mill must stay here as the carpets and linens in my room were stained and there were boot scuff marks on the walls and doors. There were a lot of work trucks in the parking lot the night I was there.

The room was comfortable however when I checked in I had to wipe down several surfaces as there were remnants of spills, dust, and dirt on the furniture. Housekeeping obviously leaves a lot to be desired. The bed was in good shape and I slept well. The HVAC unit was quiet and worked well.

I usually say something to management if a room isn't reasonably clean but I was in a rush to leave the next morning so I can't comment on a response from management.

I would consider staying here again.

This is a good value and decent place. The room furnishings were new, the bed comfortable, the bathroom updated. The room was pretty small, but that was not an issue for us. The breakfast was very good - comparable to what we get at the Hampton Inns where we usually stay.

Stayed here wth two friends. Visited Lewisburg and White Sulphur Springs and this is the closest we could get to those because of WV state fair. As others have said, the room was recently redecorated - mod 70's type decor - comfortable beds - and OK continental breakfast. Had flat screen tv. Covington itself does not have much to offer or if it did we did not see it. Only negative about hotel itself was that the lights were very dim in room - I know that is to keep down energy costs but would have preferred a little brighter I thought the rate was a little high - $139 - but I am assuming rates were higher because of the fair. Would recommend
