My 2 kids, best girlfriend and her 2 girls visited the Northern Neck of Virginia last week. We called the Northen Neck Tourism Council to get ideas on what to do. Patsy Long of the tourism council recommended visiting Colonial Beach. We were staying in Reedville, Va at "Barbara's Cozy Cottage" which was great (private pool). Our trip was in the height of summer, 8-6 through 8-9, 2007.
It took us over an hour to get to Colonial Beach. Upon arrival, we thought we entered the Twilight Zone. The town appeared deserted and delapidated. When we got to the beach, there were 2 people there and 2 creepy men in the water mining for something.
There was no sand- only rocks. Poisonous jelly fish and seaguls devouring dead snakes. It was the worst beach experience any human could have ever encountered.
We drove back to the cottage and jumped in the pool. Nice.
Another thing about Reedville. If you have a queezy stomach, do not go. It is a fishing town with a fish processing plant. Any slight breeze causes the stench to stifle any outdoor activity.
There is a reason you never hear anyone talk about the Northern Neck.
