“Snug Harbor is my new "Favorite" vacation getaway!”

Making reservations with Basia was pleasant and trouble free, and I had a good feeling about this place from the start. From the moment we arrived at Snug Harbor, John, the owner, came out to greet us at the car and told us this is the place to relax and enjoy ourselves, that everything would be easy, and he wasn't kidding. This was the most relaxing vacation we took in years! Chincoteague is miles away from the commercialized tourism trap. This truly is the place to be if you are looking for a relaxing vacation by the bay or ocean. The cottage was perfect for us. It was clean, it had a fridge and stove and dishes and utensils, they even provided dish soap and sponges. The bed was sooo comfy, with the pillowtop bed covering. There was a small living room and a dining room table and air conditioner. It was a stones throw to the deck overlooking the marina, and they supplied plenty of chairs and loungechairs, with options as to where to sit down to relax. There were cute little tiki huts too. Across the marina we were able to see some horses moving along the beachline. A couple guys were fishing off the dock, catching tiny sharks and eels and lots of people had crab nets in the water. Anything needed for fishing or crabbing, they have on supply, including the rods and equipment and bait. There was a pontoon available for rent. plenty of kayaks and skiff boats. Again, anything you wanted to do was hassle free and easy. I immensely enjoyed sitting on the quiet deck into the wee hours of the nite, sipping wine and watching them fish, and chatting with the people who I met who were staying beside us. The view was spectacular. During the morning I enjoyed sitting on the deck relaxing in the sun, watching the boating and fishing activities around us, and we made some sandwiches and sat at one of the tiki bars to eat. One afternoon we asked for a tour of the marina, and another John, one of the crew there, gave us a beautiful tour, and we saw lots of interesting wildlife and vegetation.
The town was small and homey and comfortable. There was a nice little affordable grocery store where we picked up some things to cook and drink at the cottage. Another thing I loved about Chincoteague was the roadside eatery "shacks", small places that cooked up wonderful bbq or seafood, and we look forward to trying some new ones next time. We had fresh shrimp, soft shell crabs, pork bbq and ribs, and brought it home to enjoy at our own paradise : ) We went to the beach. To get there we drove through a wildlife refuge, where we saw a small horde of wild ponies grazing. At the end of the woods, the beach and ocean suddenly appeared, I found that intriguing, going from the woods to the beach like that. The parking for the beach was literally just ten feet from the actual beach and ocean. You could relax on the bay side, or the beach side. Because Chincoteague Island is not commercialized, and there was no boardwalk, our day at the beach truly consisted of nothing but sitting back relaxing in the sun and watching people.
What an experience. I loved it so much that I am planning on going back again before the end of summer. We checked out other places along the waterfront to rent, but nothing, and I mean nothing, was as charming as Snug Harbor's waterfront. And the husband and wife team were wonderful, they really know how to put their guests at ease from the get go!

“Beautiful, relaxing, nature-filled, fun family vacation!”

I am an older woman with some disabilities with two sons in their 20's. We had an excellent week-long vacation at Snug Harbor! When we arrived on Sunday evening, John greeted us saying "Welcome to paradise!" We discovered he was absolutely accurate.

Since I made reservations with only a couple of weeks' notice, we had to move half-way through the week from one vintage cottage to another. Our first stay was in Cottage #5. It is just a few yards up and away from the water. There is an absolutely beautiful view from the four large windows in the bedroom that has a sitting area, large bed, and large TV. You can see the lighthouse, fishing boats, and many different types of birds. There is another room with twin beds and dining table. There is a tiny bathroom with shower stall and a small kitchen off it. It appears to have fairly new carpeting and is freshly painted.

Mid-week we moved to Cottage #9. It is smaller but has a new marble countertop and sink in the kitchen area. The bathroom is bigger than Cottage #5's and is adequate with a shower stall. From the two large windows, you can look out onto the docks, boats, and water. There is parking right in front of the cottage. The cottage is wood-paneled and appears to have fairly new carpeting and flooring.

The best part of Snug Harbor is its location almost directly across from the lighthouse in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Snug Harbor has its own marina with rental of boats, kayaks, and canoes. (We rented a boat for a day and kayaks another day. John taught my sons to crab off the dock. My sons had a week's catch of six small sand sharks, a couple of croakers, an eel, and about 15 crabs!)

If you tire of boating, fishing, and resting, you can be at the beautiful sand beach and hiking and biking trails in the Refuge in 5-10 minutes by car. The shops and restaurants are just minutes away.

Staying here is somewhere between staying in a motel and renting a house. The linens were provided, and we got clean towels once when we needed them. I took paper towels, dishwashing liquid, scouring powder, and liquid hand soap for the bathroom and kitchen with us. There is a toaster and coffee maker, but no iron or hair dryer. The next time we go, I'll bring a wooden clothes-drying rack for towels, etc.

John and his staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Hopefully, we will be back to visit!

Make sure you talk to Captain John about where the best fishing spots are. He has all the equipment needed to go clamming and fishing. If your lucky he will cook them up right at the tikki hut for a wonderfull outdoor meal. When we were there...have to go back soon, we went next door and bought fresh seafood. The crabbing off of the docks is also a fun time. We really enjoyed our stay and cannot wait to go back. Great for kids to learn how to fish!

“We return every year and love it every time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2012 for a stay in August 2011

These are great little, spotless cabanas. They are modest in size, but they couldn't be in a better location. The owners always make us feel like family returning. We can sit on one of the docks or lounge in the chairs and watch the sunrise or the boats. It is convenient to all things in Chincoteague, yet you feel like you are off the tourist trail. If you are looking for a fourstar resort with all the amenities, this is not your spot. If you are looking for a reasonably-priced place with four-star surroundings, this is it! We always buy some local seafood from one of the roadside stands nearby and cook it up in our cabin's kitchen and then play cards. It is so fun. Thanks, Snug Harbour for always being there for us!"
