I have stayed here on business 1-2 nights about every other week since around mid-June 2013. I've been in fewer than a dozen rooms, each with its own unique "personality." Maintenance is kind of hit-or-miss. Some rooms have light fixtures that don't work, and most have toilets that run most of the night. I've had maintenance called to my room several times for clogged toilets -- despite how much they run, they don't flush particularly well.
The rooms are generally clean, except for the carpets which are consistently filthy. A couple of walks across the carpet will turn white socks brown. The carpets are also noticeably sticky on bare feet, so they probably haven't been cleaned in a very long time. I just keep my shoes on until I'm ready to crawl into bed, so it's hard to truly get comfortable.
There's some mildew in the usual bathroom places which a little bit of extra attention could take care of. It's not bad, but fixing it would make the place look SO much better. Also, the air conditioners are packed full of mildew, and probably a little bit of mold... it's gross. I leave them off most of the time. Some of the rooms (301 in particular) stink to high heaven when the heat/AC is turned on.
The good news is the hotel is apparently about to undergo some significant remodeling, and I think I've read that new carpet is in the works, so hopefully these maintenance and cleanliness problems will be taken care of very soon.
The breakfast is mediocre at best, but it's the same stuff you'll find at any Hampton Inn. In the past, I have appreciated that they often mix cheese in with the fake "eggs" because it gives them a little bit of flavor, but they haven't been doing this recently. Hampton Inn recently switched to a new fake "egg product" which in my opinion is even less appetizing -- it's like eating unflavored, warm Jell-O. Seeing it floating on top of a puddle of warm water is just plain gross. Copious amounts of salt and pepper will make it somewhat more edible. The sausage is way too greasy, but if you can catch the seasoned potatoes, they are the one shining star in the breakfast area. Fortunately, there is a Wawa across the street that offers plenty of breakfast stuff.
Be forewarned that traffic is pretty bad on two sides of the hotel. Greenbrier Parkway introduces a lot of noise if you stay on that side of the hotel, and traffic on Woodlake Drive makes it darn near impossible to get in and out of the hotel without taking your life into your own hands. Not much the hotel can do about it, but don't expect to make a left turn out of the hotel until after about 9 PM.
There's plenty of dining in the area, mainly along Greenbrier Parkway on the other side of the Interstate, as well as a few restaurants along Military Highway. There's an awesome Mexican restaurant, El Loro, at the intersection of Greeenbrier and Volvo Parkway, and an amazing German restaurant, the German Pantry, about 10 minutes away on Virginia Beach Boulevard.
The staff at the hotel have been awesome. Another reviewer mentioned Matt, and yes, Matt is amazing. He is extremely pleasant and very accommodating.
Unfortunately, my company's hotel contracts have changed with the start of the new year so I can't stay here for my business travel any more, but I do look forward to returning for personal travel and checking out the finished product after the remodel is completed.

Dear Steve C,

Thank you for your recent comments on your last 6 months of staying at the Hampton Inn Chesapeake. This is where we find opportunities to improve as well as praise. I am sorry your company's contract has ended and that indeed you choose to come visit on a personal level. We have many changes in store and yes, new carpet is one of them. As of 2014 we have changed our preventive maintenance program which will address some of the issues you brought up.
As far as the traffic, yes, it can be challenging at times, however, our location is the best in Chesapeake. We are conveniently located to many awesome restaurants and shopping. Thank you for your kind words regarding Matt. He is a great associate who adds so much to our team. I will be sure to share your comments with Matt and the rest of the team.
We hope to see you again soon!
