We thought the web site for Silver Thatch was inviting, but upon our arrival, were very disappointed in its location (close to busy highway and average housing area). We chose a "cottage" room on the main level, adjacent to the inn because the main inn had a pub, which
we thought could possibly be noisy later in the evening. Well, I'm sure the pub was quieter than the group that chose to visit on the patio, outside our room, where smoking was allowed. Even with windows
closed, it was noisy and the smoke still wafted into our room. The room itself was ok, but the shower door needs replacing or repaired.
The metal strip around the glass has corroded which was not inviting for our morning shower. Also the air conditioner unit blows directly onto the bed. If we turned the temp. lower, it became hot and stuffy.
This was definitely comparable to a motel rather than a B&B, so we were very disappointed. Now then ---- breakfast was served in the dining room of the main house, and it was excellent. We had arranged to stay two nights, but chose to go on our way after that first night. We stay very often in B&B's whenever we travel, so compared to others, I would rank our room at Silver Thatch very LOW. Thanks for listening.

    • Liked — breakfast in the dining room was more what we had anticipated.
    • Disliked — patio outside our room where others gathered to visit after 10 p.m. Air conditioner blowing directly on us in bed. -- General atmosphere in cottage room. Main Inn was much more inviting.

We recently stayed at the Silver Thatch Inn on a Monday evening. The restaurant is closed on Mondays so we did not dine there. We were greeted by both Jim & Terri and offered a glass of wine or beer in the cozy bar. We stayed in the Thomas Jefferson room which has a large King bed. Their website is very accurate in depicting the Inn. Our breakfast on Tues. morning was delicious french toast accompanied with fresh fruit. We were able to take advantage of a "Last minute" booking rate of $139. Certainly worth every penny. I would doubt that this would be available on a weekend because I assume the Inn would be fully booked. The slightly north of town location made for ideal touring of outlying sights in Charlottesville. While this is not a negative , I would add that the Inn is located very near a busy highway in a residential development. The Inn does have green space around it, but it is not "out in the woods" somewhere. We actually found this to be quite convenient. Would definately recommend this historic Inn to all!

This little bed and breakfast was great from check-in to check-out. We stayed in the Thomas Jefferson Room, which had a large canopied bed with plenty of room. The owners are hands-on and are there to welcome you, to helping you with your luggage to answering any of your questions about the city. In addition, the breakfasts included with your rate included juice, coffee, rolls and a gourmet meal which one day was a spinach, mushroom and cheese omelet and another was sweedish pancakes with carmelized apples. We also ate dinner at the inn one night and it was the best dinner we had during our entire stay. You also are able to use the community pool that is located next door. I would definitely reccommend this place.

We live in Charlottesville and when we want a quiet relaxed dinner we and friends often enjoy dinner at The Silver Thatch. The menu always has wonderful choices and the service has always been excellent. (Especially if Martin is your waiter!) We highly recommend you enjoy dinner at The Silver Thatch, if you are looking for a quiet gormet dining experience.

We booked our reservations 1 year in advance in preparation for my daughter's graduation from UVA Law School. The room itself was okay, but the dining experience was one of the worst we have encountered. There were 6 of us. We were seated for our 7:30 p.m. reservations. Twenty minutes later, no one had come to our table so one of the gentlemen in our party inquired of the hostess. Finally, a waiter came. My daughter found a piece of cardboard in her salad and when we told the waiter, he took her salad which had hardly been touched and did not offer her another. The waiter could not remember who ordered what and stood at the head of the table, announcing an entree and waiting for someone to speak up. When the entrees came, the waiter brought the wrong dish for one of the diners. In spite of all 6 of us saying this guest ordered mushorrom ravioli, the waiter implied it was the guest's mistake and he[the waiter] heard veal. The veal was refused and after waiting too long for the correct order it was cancelled by the diner who then shared my mushroom ravioli with me. The watier never returned to re-fill the wine glasses from the bottle of wine we ordered. Finally, one of the gentlemen in our group topped off everyone's glass. When the horrible service was brought to the attention of the owner by one of the guests, he did not seem concerened about the poor servce. The owner only came to the table and apologized to the group, after the one guest who brought it to his attention suggested that would be the proper thing to do. The owner implied that we 'wanted something for nothing' and acted as though our complaints were petty. He offered free dessert. All six of us declined the offer....we wanted nothing else to do with this establishment.
