My husband and I went to El Tepeyac for the first time tonight. Wow! First, the restaurant is beautiful--it looks like a hip, trendy, stylish place, with a slightly Hispanic vibe. It was populated by a diverse group of people-- upscale older white people, middle aged working class Hispanics, and trendy young hipsters. I don't think I've ever seen a restaurant with such a diverse clientele. They have a really fun and unique drink menu-- think homemade rice milk horchatas and tequilas with jalapeños and corn. The complimentary chips and salsa were outstanding. Onto the food: the yucca appetizer is one of my favorite things I've ever had, and the papusas, sopes, tacos, and gorditas were terrific. If you're adventurous, I highly recommend ordering the more unusual items, such as the beef tongue or chicarron. The service was great--our waitress was knowledgeable and attentive, and the manager also came over frequently to see how we were doing. Additionally, the prices were fantastic; we had a three course meal with drinks, and we only paid about $40. I honestly can't believe that a restaurant of this quality, with this type of unique food, exists in Charlottesville at this price. We will most certainly be back. It's my new favorite place.
