“great food , average service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

We go to Flaming Wok restaurant when ever our family friends invites us to join for their kids birthday party. The food has been good but the service, I wish they could learn and improve! You almost have to beg for refill of your drinks ! The chef does his cooking in front of you , amusing the kids but the waitress vanishes away once she takes the order! Probably it was not intentional because the same person had to take orders from other guests( my observations) but still they could improve the customer service skills. Other wise, OK!

“Very good take-out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

We've settled on the FW as our Chinese take-out of choice. The kitchen is super fast so you can stop in on the way home, order & be back out the door in 10 minutes or so with some tasty food.

“Poor Service, OK Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

I probably wouldn't come here too often except that the kids like it for birthday parties. But even they were disappointed after our last visit. With six of us having a reservation for Teppanyaki, we had to wait 45 minutes for our chef to show up. I politely asked our surly waitress what was up, and she ignored me and walked away. Eventually our chef appeared and half-heartedly went through the same "tricks" they've been demonstrating here for years without variation. That said the food was pretty good though the scallops were rubbery. Usually this place is somewhat better - thus the three stars instead of two - but the management seems to assume they'll continue to do good business without any real effort on their part. As for my family, we're all heartily sick of the Flaming Wok and won't be back for a long, long time if ever. At the high price (well over $20 per person with one drink) customers should expect something special instead of just OK.

“good food, entertaining chef, relaxed atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

We have never ordered off the regular menu and sat at a regular table. We prefer the Teppanyaki Grill Table. After a tasty soup and salad, the chef arrives with your meal ingredients and the show begins. He chops and slices veggies and meat with a flourish, clanging and tossing and catching knives and spatulas, creating a blast of flame, and pushing piles of rice, broccoli, onions, zucchini, shrimp/beef/chicken/scallops etc. around on the table with gusto. Each teppanyaki table seats 8-9 so if you are with a small group, be prepared to sit at table with other diners. Relaxed atmosphere, dated decor but a classic in Cville and fun for all ages. Good attentive service from the waitress, water glass kept full. Chefs are skilled, friendly and entertaining. Definitely worth at least one visit and you are likely to return again and again. Food is tasty, and steaming hot straight from grill to plate. Huge portions, they pretty much automatically bring you a box to take leftovers home. Kind of noisy, would not recommend teppanyaki table for a quiet intimate dinner or business meeting. Our meal for five was around $140.

“Good Chinese Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

This is a standard Chinese restaurant -- nothing innovative. But I find that they do good versions of most of the classic Chinese dishes. My parents, who are food snobs, actually like this place too. Some other reviewers recommend the food that they cook "live" in front of you -- the teppanyaki grill. I disagree. If you want a show, go to Vegas. The traditional Chinese food here is much, much better than the "show food," which I find rather bland. Besides, if you sit down and have traditional Chinese, someone is bound to come in and order the teppanyaki -- then you can watch the flames shoot up towards the ceiling without having to eat the teppanyaki food. I like the hot and hour soup, the Sesame chicken, the General Tso's Chicken, the pan fried dumplings, and the moo goo gai pan.
