Every time I dine at the Ivy Inn, the experience is better than the last... and they have all been very good to excellent.
I seriously doubt there is any item on the menu that you could go wrong with. This time, I enjoyed the Osso Bucco entree alongside a Baby Arugula salad, topped off by a wonderful chocolate dessert with walnuts, caramel, and chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. The presentation, preparation, portion, and fresh ingredients were all outstanding.
Our service was great. Though the wait staff was busy, our wine server stepped in after serving wine to make suggestions and take the dinner order, without a hitch or hint that this was unusual -- which set the tone for an evening where at least three of the staff tended to our dinner (besides the chef) and made this a pleasant experience.
The ambiance of the Inn is classic Virginian Inn, with several rooms (we dined upstairs), fit for pleasant conversation, a sense of intimacy, and nice background "dinner music".
This has always been one of our "Top Five" restaurants in Charlottesville -- probably the "all around" number one or two -- a great place for Couples, Family, Friends, or Business. Not a "cheap" restaurant in any sense, but good value.
