Jason's Deli recently opened in Charlottesville. Initially, I admit I was very skeptical. I thought that the last thing this area needed was one more sandwich shop. To my surprise, I discovered that it was a really nice sandwich shop, and quite frankly, I think the food is of better quality than what is offered by many competitors in the area. The sandwiches range from $6-8 and they come with a side (several options including chips, baked chips, steamed veggies, or fruit). The manager's special involves half of any sandwich, soup of your choice, and a side. The awesome thing is that while the menu is not particularly extensive (approximately 7 sandwiches are featured at any one time), all sandwiches on the menu can be a part of the manager's special. Also, sandwiches are made fresh and can be modified at the customer's request. Additionally, the one thing that sets this place apart from similar sandwich shops is that it has a large salad bar with fresh offerings. A woman behind me in line was raving about how wonderful the salad bar was, although because it was my first time in this establishment, I opted for a sandwich. After getting a look at the salad bar, I will definitely try it next time. Anyhow, there is an option for people who want to avoid the line and just get the soup, salad bar, and fountain drinks--Anyone who is paying with plastic (i.e. debit or credit card) can just wander in and pay at the automated machine and help themselves. The salad bar is all you can eat, and it comes in at just under $8.00+tax. The pricing is reasonable. My husband and I were able to eat for less than $20. We both got a version of the club sandwich (1/2) which is served warm on a flaky, fresh croissant. We had soups--chicken noodle and the fire-roasted tortilla. Both were excellent choices; the chicken noodle had thick egg noodles with vegetables and chicken in a tasty broth and the fire-roasted tortilla had a southwestern flare without too much of a "bite". It was fantastic! There are approximately 9 soup offerings, and the quality to me seemed more fresh than what I've had at similar places. I think one or two of the sandwich and soup offerings are seasonal and rotate. Being that this was my first visit to Jason's, I am not completely sure if this is the case. The fountain beverage offerings are wide-ranging; they offer the typical range of coke products (i.e. Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero) along with Barq's Root beer and a pomegranate-blueberry electrolyte sports drink. They also offer a variety of teas (sweet tea, unsweetened tea, black currant tea) as beverage options. The bonus to this place is that they have free soft serve ice cream. This is especially great if you are looking for dessert but nothing too heavy. If you are interested in something else for a dessert offering, they have plenty of options that will cost you a few bucks extra. In my visit, I saw cookies, fudge brownies, strawberry shortcake, plain cheesecake, turtle cheesecake, and their signature muffalettas. Overall, this is a good place to go if you are looking for something quick, yet not fast food. There are plenty of options here to make your meal healthy, and in the general vicinity of the Fashion Square Mall, I think it's one, if not the only, option for such choices. I would recommend going to this place. The dining area looks like it could accommodate a large number of people at both booths and open table seating. The restrooms were clean and accommodating. We went on a Sunday, apparently around the time that church services had concluded, so it was a bit busy. I think it would be smart to call ahead and place your order or order online to avoid waiting, but we waited maybe 5-10 minutes in line, so it really wasn't terrible. We were taken care of well by the employees who were courteous, quick to bring out our meals, and always present in the dining area to bus tables. Also, this business offers catering and to-go ordering, which is a good option if you are looking to host or plan a local event. I read on something that they do deliver as well, but I'm not sure if that's only for big orders.
