Owner description: In 1774, Thomas Jefferson, one of America's first wine connoisseurs, convinced Italian Philip Mazzei to establish a vineyard on our property. With the financial support of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Thomas Adams and other prominent colonists, the Virginia Wine Company was founded on present day Jefferson Vineyards. Today Jefferson Vineyards is a boutique, family owned winery. We have been creating nationally recognized, quality Virginia wines from classic varietals for over thirty four years, and are considered a pioneer of the Virginia wine industry. We are located between Monticello (home of Thomas Jefferson) and Ash Lawn (home of James Monroe). We open daily for tastings, from 11:00am - 5:00pm (Monday through Thursday) and 10:00am - 6:00pm (Friday through Sunday). Tastings are $10 and include a souvenir wine glass. We offer mostly dry wines and a semi-sweet white wine. Brief tours are available at 1:00pm and 2:00pm depending on the season and staff availability. We look forward to your visit.

“Way over hyped and over priced.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2011

Way over hyped and over priced. Better wines around the corner.

My wife and I stopped at Jefferson Vineyards on Mothers Day while visiting our daughter. We have visited numerous wineries throughout Virginia and are not unfamiliar with the typical wine tasting experience. I had heard from others to avoid a stop at Jefferson Vineyards, but my wife wanted to stop and give it a chance.

The wine tasting fee was $10 per person with a plain (not personalized for Jefferson) "Reidel" glass thrown in to keep. Other vineyards' fees were less AND you received a personalized glass. There were about 8 wines to taste. Our "server" was an immature ditzy young woman who wanted nothing more than to finish the session as quickly as possible. To this end, each pour was the smallest I have ever received (less than a sip).

I really did not find one wine that deserved their self-promoted buzz. Some were just.....bad. All were overpriced compared to other Virginia wines.

I would suggest going to some of the other wineries in the area and skipping this one. Go to Blenheim or Barboursville for great wines, bigger pours, relaxed pace, and friendly, knowledgeable people.

“Ok wines, too crowded, not a great indoor atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2011

The inside tasting room is small and was very crowded. The service with wines was not very good and it was jam packed. The outdoor area was very nice, and the cashier ringing up the tasting and souvenirs was nice. If you can buy a bottle and sit outside, it's worth it. Try to hit it early or late, when it may be less crowded. The area is beautiful, but the tasting room is my least favorite in the area, as are the wines.

“enjoyable! quality wines, beautiful location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2011

Granted it was a gloomy day, and the area is has yet to awaken for spring...

Staff was nice enough. Felt a little rushed. Wish they had given some instructions for the 2 first timers in our group or gone more in depth about the samples for our 4 enthusiasts. Staff admitted that since its small, they don't like to take too much time talking about each wine.

It IS a small place and can get a little crowded. Large pillars separate the tasting counter. Best to go with a party no bigger than 4 so you can all stand at the same counter. Clean and cozy.

The wines were all delicious We stayed and enjoyed a bottle on the outdoor patio, and took 4 home.

The best part, tasting fee was only $10 and included a nice Reidel wine glass to take home. (wish it was engraved Jefferson Winery)

Will surely be back when everything is in bloom, I'm sure its beautiful!

“perfect vineyard”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2010

I loved this vineyard -- the wine was superb, the grounds gorgeous, and the staff extremely helpful. Joseph was terrific and knew a lot about the wine and the history of the vineyard. This was the start of a very fun and silly wine tasting adventure around charlottesville. We will be back!

“Historical place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2010

We enjoyed this winery... we did not go on the tour... but the tasting was great. They did 9 different pours and the lady who poured was very informative! It is a $5 charge and includes the glass. We bought two wines...one we will keep for a couple of years to age. Was able to write on the bottle with a silver pen ... to remind us of the visit!
