“James Monroe's home - great tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2012

After visiting Monticello, we drove 2 miles down the road to see James Monroe's home. Be sure to get "the Colonel" as your tour guide. You won't be disappointed !!!

“Interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2012

Home of James Monroe and his family. Tour was very interesting and informative. House contains many original pieces that belonged to the family. House and grounds have been well kept. Beautiful setting and much known history of the family available. Really enjoyed the tour.

“Don't miss this!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2012

I didn't know much about James Monroe before, but his story is very interesting. He was a great man who did not live beyond his means, and did not die in debt like Mr. Jefferson and Mr. Madison. The tour was very educational, and the guides are passionate about history!

“Very interesting, relatively unknown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2012

While most people coming to this area want to visit Monticello, Ash Lawn-Highland, the home of James Monroe, is well worth the short trip down the road. The house has been extensively refurnished with a large number of original Monroe furniture. The wallpaper was recreated from the exact design still on record in france from when the Monroe's ordered it. The out buildings are very interesting as well as the ice cave. Overall, it will only take about 1-1.5 hours to visit, but I could have stayed longer. If you enjoy early American History, you owe it to yourself to see this place.

“Excellent Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2012

Had been to Monticello several times, and Colonial Williamsburg many times, and it compares very favorably. Small crowds, very personal tour. Our guide was extremely knowledgable and witty. My teenage daughters thougth it was the best tour guide they had ever had.
