“Middle of the road for the Camino”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012

This restaurant got a great review in our local weekly, so my wife and I had high expectations for this newly opened place, which the menu and website described as combining Spanish, Italian, and French dishes. We had an uneven, middle-of-the-camino (road) experience. My wife had a delicious beet salad, but my heirloom tomatos were dry and tasteless. She found her penne pasta with pancetta was reasonably good, but decided to pass on taking the leftovers home. I was satisfied, but not impressed, with my seafood stew featuring grilled grouper with shrimp, mussels, and clams. The side of roasted potatos was very good and the bread (which we had to ask for) was chewy and great with the olive oil. We might have enjoyed the food more if the service and atmosphere had been better. The service was slow and inattentive, despite at least 4 different persons covering a small dining area. The restaurant was small and cozy, with a combination of booths and small tables, but surprisingly noisy. Sharing a building with a movie theater, there was a strong smell of popcorn throughout the meal, which was distracting. The restaurant was located on West Market, near the Omni hotel and the west end of the downtown mall. Look for the Vinegar Hill Theater which is in the same building.

“Not a great experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2012

We chose this spot because of the great Open Table reviews and its location. It certainly was easy to get to and was just steps from Main St., which lent itself well to an after dinner stroll, but that's about it for Camino. The food felt very fussy, but not particularly creative. The salad I chose was red peppers and mozzarella, a new spin on a Caprese. However, it was such a huge portion of red pepper it felt heavy and rendered the mozzarella tasteless.
My lamp chops were well done, which really ruined the dish, and came with a huge collection of odd sides: sweet potato, turnips in honey, and spinach. My husband enjoyed his pasta with rabbit and his soup, so perhaps I had a bad selection, but that doesn't forgive the well-done chops.
Our server was uninformed of the menu and had to disappear a few times when we asked her questions about the specials or sides. She didn't provide a spoon for the soup or a steak knife for the chops, which I guess wouldn't need a steak knife if they weren't so well done.
I would not eat here again. There are so many charming places to eat in Charlottesville I would try another next time I'm in town.

“Truly enjoyable!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2012 via mobile

Just a truly enjoyable experience--shrimp with chiles, roasted peppers with mozzarella, pork tenderloin with sweet potato purée, penne with duck, a fine Pinot, all with attentive service and a relaxed quiet atmosphere. And prices not out of line, in teens for entrees. Note that it is small, intimate venue so atmosphere is likely to be a function of particular crowd, but food and service should be at high level we experienced.
