We dined last week at this venerable inn, a member of Relais & Chateaux, to celebrate a birthday. Service was impeccable from the minute we opened the door to the minute we departed. The dining areas are situated in the main part of the main house, built on a 2400 acre 1735 land grant to the son-in-law of Thomas Jefferson. Everyone is in a great frame of mind!
The food is exquisite. The variety unheard of. Basically, diners choose from 4 menus: delicate, light, full-bodied and robust. One may also choose a dessert apart from these 4 categories. You decide whether you want 4 or 5 courses. The evening is priced accordingly.
Gosh! We mixed and matched and shared: roasted squash soup with duck confit, sherry honey and pepita gremolata; braised sweet potato with malt vinegar, smoked raisins and puffed wheat; grilled tuna with black truffle sunchoke puree, mustard greens and radishes; slow poached farm egg with daikon kimchi, onion dashi and crispy chicken skin; corn gnocchi with pot liquor, sorghum and pickled vegetables; dry aged rib eye with roasted cauliflower, sauteed mushrooms and onion viniagrette ~ you get the idea.
The inn is globally diverse. Our bartender was from Turkey, our waiter from Brazil. They were in training for a return to their countries. Lucky Turkey and Brazil. Very lucky Charlottesville!
A simply unbelievable place.
And there was a birthday treat for the celebrant! The Clifton Inn lets nothing escape notice.
Call very early for reservations. I had hoped for the following night, but the were full three weeks in advance.
