We stayed here last month when my daughter and niece ran in the Charlottesville half-marathon. This hotel is hands-down the cleanest I have ever had the pleasure to stay in. The front-desk staff are cheerful and efficient. We didn't have an opportunity to partake of the breakfast as we were watching the marathon - 6:30 am was an early start. Sort of difficult to find - we drove by it and had to turn ourselves around - but other than that, no complaints. Beds were comfortable and plenty of towels. Don't pass this one by!

“English Inn - a great value”

We selected the English Inn after reading the reviews. The two things that sealed the deal for us was (1) they have a sauna and indoor pool (we love saunas) and (2) a great Internet rate. This hotel is pretty much sold out most of the time, so we were happy we made our reservations 3 weeks before our arrival. If this is a last minute decision, you might wish to check out the hotel deals at the various Virginia tourist offices, as the English Inn offers a $69 walk-up rate, but I think this would probably be for a standard double.

This hotel is very quiet at night, making for a very sound and undisturbed night's rest. We had a king room and it was very comfortable, and the added bonus of a small kitchenette with microwave and small frig was a nice surprise.

Our plan was to enjoy Milan Indian Restaurant (just up Rt. 29 - very convenient) and spend a day antiquing along Route 29 along with a visit to Culpepper. This hotel's location was ideal.

The hotel staff was fine. The (included) breakfast was ok. I found the breakfast room pretty depressing. Also, the tables at breakfast were pretty crowded together, making you feel like you were always in someone else's conversation. But I imagine this is because they host so many charters and groups staying here.

if you are enticed by the "gourmet cookies and tea in the afternoon," be aware that the cookies are out of a package and cannot compare to a Hampton Inn's cookies. The sauna and pool were very enjoyable.

If you want luxury or a special romantic time away, you might want to stay in a pricier hotel or bed and breakfast. But this hotel is clean, quiet, comfortable, and a great value for very pricey Charlottesville.

“The English Inn of Charlottesville was Outstanding!”

English Inn of Charlottesville

May 3, 2008

Our recent stay at the English Inn of Charlottesville was so wonderful that I had to sign up here (at the suggestion of my friend who was already a member) and provide my feedback. My wife and I and four children typically visit Charlottesville once or twice a year to see family and friends. We have stayed at many hotels in the area, but the English Inn is by far the best we have experienced. From the old-world charm of the lobby to the modern and well-appointed rooms, the hotel offers the best of everything. The staff were all friendly and helpful and really provided the "personal touch" that many hotels lack these days. The included breakfast buffet was incredible - they had different offerings each of the days were were there, including scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, an array of pastries and cereals, etc. Certainly one of the best (if not the best) breakfasts that I have had - and it was included for free! The kids loved the large indoor pool and spent many hours there. I definitely know where we will stay on all future visits to Charlottesville and would highly recommend this hotel to all.

“Serious management problems”

First, the good part: nice (but not exceptional) rooms with large beds. The pool was much bigger than expected and looked very nice, although we didn't have a chance to use it. The lobby was lovely.

Now, the not-so-good: their management needs some serious lessons in customer service and in managing a hotel.

We arrived at 11 AM on a Sunday morning after flying into DC on a red-eye from the west coast. I knew the check-in time was 3 PM, but we'd had breakfast, driven around a bit, and were too tired to do anything else. So my 2 teenagers and I walked into the lobby and I told the front desk that we had a reservation and were hoping to check-in early. Turned out I was speaking to the manager and he wouldn't even look to see if they had a room--just told me to come back at 3 PM. At that point, I explained that I wasn't safe to be on the road anymore and asked if we could just sit--and perhaps doze a bit--in the lobby. This suggestion horrified him ("we have some wedding parties coming in!"), so he actually became motivated to check and --lo and behold--they DID have a room we could check into immediately!

Now for part 2. I'm a huge college hoops fan and a University of Kansas alum, and the next night was the NCAA championship. So after a nap and freshening up, I started cruising the channels. They had a bunch of choices, but none of the majors (CBS, ABC, or NBC). This was a serious problem: no CBS=no championship game. I went back to the front desk (by this time the manager has left) and spoke to the lady there. She was extremely nice and told me that yes, some people had complained about not getting the basketball games last weekend. Maybe it was a cable problem? She wasn't really sure, but said I should talk to the manager Monday morning.

Back in my room, I made a couple of phone calls to nearby hotels. No CBS problem anywhere else.

On Monday morning I went back to talk to the manager who "helped" me check in the day before. He agreed to send a technician to my room to look at the TV right away. An hour later, my teenagers and I are sitting in our room twiddling our thumbs. Not having really planned to spend my time in Charlottesville sitting in a hotel room, I went back to the front desk and asked (nicely!) if we could expect a technician soon. The manager said the technician was busy, but would try to get there later. His tone suggested that this was an iffy proposition at best. At that point I explained that we really wanted to do some sightseeing, which meant I kind of needed to know if I should check out of their hotel and go to a CBS-equipped alternative before I missed their check-out time . The manager just looked at me and agreed I should probably check out. We did, went to the Doubletree down the road (it was a huge improvement for only $10 a night more!), and enjoyed the heart-stopping KU victory that night.

Needless to say, that was my first and last stay at an English Inn. While I was there I visited a good friend who lives in Charlottesville, and she said that she didn't know anyone who had ever stayed there. I guess now I know why!

“What a Gem”

English Inn of Charlottesville

I was aware of The English Inn after searching AAA, Orbitz and other sites but was unsure of date of arrival. Saw an ad for a discount rate in ROOMSAVERS magazine available at most rest areas on the interstates . The Inn honored the coupon without any hastle and gave us a great king room. Room was large, very clean and odorfree. Breakfast was much above average fare, especially considering the discount price we paid. Staff were all very helpful-courteous and knowledgeable. Lounge area with fireplace was inviting on a cold evening. My daughter works for a local university and I recommended that she suggest this fine establishment when her visiting clients ask for suggestions for a place to stay. I know they will be pleased with The English Inn. When in the Charlottesville area, I will be staying at this gem.
