Tour guides were very knowledgable and efficient. The bike and walking trail was awesome? Well managed . Get there early before the crowds.

“Lives up to your expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

Whenever we have guests in town we take them here . i could almost give the tour myself , but I still learn something new every time. the renovation of the visitors center a couple of years ago made a big difference to the overall visit.

“beautiful estate. if booking ahead, arrive on time.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

We visited Monticello with my niece after making a college visit to UVA. Such beautiful countryside. The place was very crowded on our Friday October afternoon. The estate is in fine shape and some excellent upgrades have been made to the visitors center since last I visited about 12 years ago. The tours are run like clockwork - so when they recommend arriving 30 minutes ahead, its best to arrive 30 minutes ahead. We missed our planned house tour and had to take time slot 2 hours later. But we made the most of it, taking in the slavery talk, visiting the gravesite and exploring the grounds and tunnels under the house.

Thanks so much for your review. You provide some great advice for visitors to arrive at least 30 minutes in advance of a reserved house tour time. We get quite busy on October weekends, as Monticello is a great place to take in scenic autumn views as well as tour Jefferson's home, explore the grounds, and take advantage of all our visitor center has to offer. We're so pleased to hear that your visit was enjoyable.

“Monticello - Home of Thomas Jefferson”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

My wife and I recently visited Thomas Jefferson home at Monticello that he designed. It's a beautiful site overlooking the town of Charlottsville, and the University of Virginia that Jefferson help create. There's a short movie of Jefferson's life and the tour of the house was well organized, provided information on Jefferson's political and personnel life and allowed questions. Did you know that Jefferson's first wife Martha Wayles and his black mistress Sally Hemmings had the same father? Visitors can walk freely around the estate and visit the gardens where Jefferson experimented with various seeds and planting techniques. You can also take a tour of the slave quarters/activities and visit Jefferson's grave site. There is also a great gift shop with reasonable prices. A most enjoyable visit...

“Delightful day at Monticello”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Monticello. Bought the basic tour plus the 'behind -the-scenes' tour.
TIP #1: We didn't book our tix until the day before. The website said the 'behind the scenes' tix were all gone, but by calling the site directly, we found availability.
TIP #2 A very nice cafe on site - good selection of food choices, reasonable prices.
