“don't expect late service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013

we had been travelling all day, we found the hotel by chance. we asked the price, about $130. we were given a room, standard holiday inn, but very dated, it felt as though it was several years past it's refurb date. no matter we were hungry and thirsty. the bar was open with 1 table of diners and 4 people at the bar. we asked for a table for dinner and were told to sit at the bar if we wanted food and to order NOW, the kitchen was going home! the ordered 2 simple dishes and then some wine. the food was in my case just o.k., but my wife's [ she was really hungery was not. we ordered more wine and the barman told us the bar was shut. we were sat at the bar. he then left.

Room Tip: try the other holiday inn, or anywhere else. i would rather have eaten "fast food" in my...

Dear Rowland:

Thank you for your feedback and taking the time to review our hotel.

Please allow me this opportunity to apologize for your meal service being rushed. The Food and Beverage team here takes great pride on providing our guest with a quality experience. I am sorry we fell short in this case. I have spoken with all the service staff on the importance of how to properly communicate with our guest our closing times. It was not our intention to make you feel rushed for your late night dinner.

All of our public space, restaurant, bar and conference area was totally gutted and renovated just five years ago. This week our architect completed the plans for exterior renovations, which we are excited to share should take place in the next 60 days.

Your willingness to share your experience is genuinely appreciated.

Sincerely,

Charles C. Friend

I had the pleasure of staying at this beautiful hotel. The staff and services were excellent. I especially enjoyed the breakfast that was provided. Kimberli gave great service and treated me like I was her own. Keep up the great work!!

Comfortable bed & choice of pillows. Good reading lamp next to comfortable chair & ottoman. Free wi-fi. Good shower pressure and temperature. Noisy A/C, esp. when it shut off. Breakfast buffet - usual - scrambled eggs, bacon (nice & crispy);, potatoes, biscuits, gravy and grits.

A group of family members stayed here for graduation weekend. Although this facility looks very dated, the rooms were spacious, clean, and had comfortable beds.

This is located on a main drag (Route 29), but the rooms were quiet. There was also no difficulty at all exiting and entering the grounds, and there was ample parking even though the hotel was fully booked.

Across the street is an outdoor shopping complex, and there is easy access to the University.

For a long weekend stay this was fine, but I probably would pick something else for an extended stay.

We had the worst possible stay on a rainy weekend. Unfortunately, I cannot think of anything nice to say about this hotel.

Charlottesville is a beautiful city but if you pick a bad hotel, your stay can be the most unsatisfying. This hotel is located on a busy intersection and it is really difficult to get in and out of the parking lot. Once you are in your room, you can enjoy the ugly views of the same busy street and grocery store across the road. Don't expect views of Shenandoah from this hotel.

The hotel is also very dated. The furniture is falling apart. We had a 1 foot long metal rod sticking out of one of the uncomfortable beds. Watch your shins in this one.

I am surprised that Holiday Inn is willing put its name on this operation. Certainly not worthy of a major brand and definitely not a 3 star hotel. Stay away from this hotel.

Dear Bobby RVA,
Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience in Charlottesville. We are sorry to hear about your stay and we are remorseful that you had nothing nice to say about your visit. I believe the weekend that you stayed; it did rain for three straight days. I am sad that it was rainy and gloomy for your visit. As you stated Charlottesville is a wonderful city to visit.

We have two entrances, one on Hydraulic Road beside the hotel across from the new town center, and then the front entrance on Emmet Street N. I know that busy weekend traffic can be a aggravating in Charlottesville. The Shenandoah is located 40 plus miles west from Charlottesville. On your next visit to Charlottesville try visiting Carter’s Mountain, which has spectacular views of the Charlottesville area. On a clear day from our top floors one can view Carter’s Mountain. We have replaced all beds with Serta bedding in the past year, which is their top of the line bedding. I know bedding can be very subjective.
Again thank you for your comments and please feel free to call me, I would like to know more about your past stay.

Warmest regards,

Charles Friend

Stayed two nights on a weekend while attending a wedding. Overall, a fine stay and a good value. Some thoughts:

Pros:
Friendly service.
Clean rooms.
Free access to Gold's Gym right across the road
Indoor pool looked nice, although we did not take advantage.

Cons:
Rooms (mainly bathrooms) could use some updating
Fitness room was a joke. Two treadmills, a bike, and a broken stair climber. But, see the "pro" above about Gold's Gym.
Getting in/out of this property can be a nightmare during busy traffic times.
Would have been nice to have breakfast included.

Next time I'm in Charlottesville I would probably look for another option, but wouldn't rule this one out!

I've been here for 3 days and have only gotten a 25 percent off coupon for the very sub standard breakfast. I still have not had a maid enter my room and the rooms are very noisy. The shuttle will take you anywhere within a five-mile radius which is nice but sometimes you have to wait an hour to get it.
