My husband and I just returned from a Labor Day weekend stay at the Boar's Head Inn. After reading all of the glowing reviews here about the Boar's Head, we were really looking forward to it. Our experience, however, was less than tolerable.

The front desk staff was wonderful and professional. We really felt welcome. Then we were assigned a room in Ednam Hall and our exciting weekend stay went quickly downhill from there. The room was drenching wet, right down to the sheets on the bed, and reeked of mildew. It was so bad that we had to request a dehumidifier. After a 20 minute wait, one was delivered by housekeeping. I asked if all the rooms were like this in Ednam Hall and was told that yes, they were. Nearly 2 hours later it was clear the dehumidifier wasn't going to take care of the humid conditions so we went to the front desk and requested another room.

We were given a Queen room (that would be a downgrade from the King package that we purchased) in the main building. While better than where we were, it was much smaller and therefore disappointing. We managed to salvage the weekend until check-out, where we were still charged the King rate even though we were reassigned to a Queen room. After speaking with the front desk manager, they eventually credited the difference.

For the price that the Boar's Head Inn charges, and their supposed 4 Diamond rating, I expected a lot more out of the accommodations. I was sorely disappointed and would be hard-pressed to stay there again.

not necessarily for the business traveler.

I stayed at The Boar's Head in August 2007. Most of the people I work with stayed at the Omni, but I convinced about 7 people to 'live a little' and stay here with me.

The good:
Even though I got a standard queen, the room was lovely. There is free internet access in every room. The grounds were really nice. The lake was lovely. The staff is very friendly. None of the people I was with ever got any 'attitude' when we called each other's rooms or made any requests. At the end of our meetings, The Old Mill Room gave us a pricey, but darn good meal with darn good wine. With tip and a couple of bottles of wine, our tab came to about $120/person.

The bad:
There is only one computer in the business center. I had to beg someone to let me on for 5 minutes to do a print job. The gym isn't that close to the main building and after receiving 'scenic way' directions, I didn't have much time to work out. The gym cafe wasn't open at 7am and it would've been nice to have a pre-work piece of fruit or smoothie. The spa couldn't fit me in after my meetings. The last spa appointment possible isn't very late. Oh, and ironically, even though I'm the one who wanted us to stay here, I got the smallest room and was the only one in my party who didn't receive the turn down service nightly (only happenned once for me).

Would I stay there again? Definitely not for business, but maybe for a personal vacation. It doesn't provide enough business ammenities or luxury to make up for the 'not downtown' location...

Most parents of UVA students think of staying at the Boars Head Inn but it is generally booked well in advance for football games and event weekends. We decided to stay in late August before school started and we enjoyed the stay.

Our ground floor room was spacious and had a screen door to our own private patio from which we could see the lake. The bed was very comfortable and the decor suited the room. The bathroom had one of the best showerheads we have ever had---excellent pressure. The closet had a light and there were robes available.

Our package included free breakfast as well as all taxes, resort fees and gratuities. I would recommend that since these expenses add up quickly. The breakfast buffet was OK--I would not have spent $14 on it but since it was included it was OK.

We used the fitness center and the outdoor pool, both of which were very clean and pleasant.

With so many diverse restaurants in town, we did not eat other meals at the Inn. The menu seemed very pricy.

All in all, a pleasant stay for about $250 per night including those fees and taxes and gratuities.

We really liked the Boar's Head. We got a Bed, Breakfast and Dinner package, and all the food was excellent. There are 3 pools. I am often bothered by screaming kids at pools (I am relatively "old") but the pools were big enough that I had very little noise problem. The sports center is amazing: 3 floors, with indoor tennis, raquetball, basketball and climbing wall; weight and cardio room that runs the whole length of the building; cafe and outdoor terraces. We stayed in the Ednam building, which is separate from the main lodge and seems to be a conference center, but the Boar's Head layout is such that nothing is very far from anything else.

Our one problem was very slow maid service. We left our room at about 9:30 a.m., with a "service needed" sign on the door, and at 4:00 it still wasn't cleaned. When I complained, housekeeping sent someone right away. The maid said something about not having the right key, but that didn't really make sense.

I plan to return. We went to Barboursville and Burnley wineries. Burnley's dessert wines are good. We also went to Montpelier, where they are excavating and reconstructing James Madison's house. It's still a lot of boards and plaster, but it's fascinating to see the process

“Added "tip" at old mill room”

I did not stay at the Boar's Head Inn, but I was there for a conference. I had the overpriced cold lunch buffet in the old mill room because I wanted to catch a quick bite before the conference began. This was $14.50 for a few pieces of fruit and a small salad. With the 9% tax and the additional 15% tip (more than necessary considering all the waiter did was bring me some water and the check - and took his time with that) my total was $18.01. However, on my credit card statement, this showed up as $18.81. It seems to me that it would be very easy for someone to change a '0' to an '8' to get a little extra tip. I'm guessing they do this to a lot of people and expect that no one will notice or remember exactly how much the bill was. I have contested the charge with my credit card company. Hopefully if this is just one dishonest employee this will alert management and will put an end to this sort of thing. If it is management that is doing it, at least it will be a little inconvenience to them. If you eat here, keep an eye out for extra charges to your credit card, or just pay in cash. Better yet, eat somewhere else.
